I agree, it makes people feel superior to other fans.
Back in the heyday of Fall Out Boy, they had their fan club, the Overcast Kids, and they got everything. I was in middle school at the time so I didn't have the money to spend like $50 on a fan club. But they had their own message board, they were the ones that got to go to the music video shoots, and they even got secret shows just for the fan club and it was very unfair.

But I really don't think Gaslight would do anything like that

Well now see, I wouldn't be against the secret shows...! But I see your point, that the younger/broke people who might love the band just as much would be shut out because they couldn't afford the fan club fee.
