Top Five Most Revolutionary Bands/Artists

Number off 1-5 Which bands you believe were the most revolutionary.

I'll put my oppinion in later.

1. Ramones/Sex Pistols (Americans believe The Ramones invented punk, Brits say The Sex Pistols did)

2. Minor Threat started a revolutionary movement (straight edge), punk can be organized and songs can be about more than just getting drunk and slurring words. Also responsible for the best record label of all time.

3. Operation Ivy, a bunch of 16 year old kids, are the ones responsible for EVERY current "hot topic punk" band. They proved that punk can be melodic

4. The Clash/Dead Kennedys, who knew punk could be about politics?

5. Johnny Cash, go ahead, try to claim that he is not punk. His music might not fit the defenition of punk, but his persona is the model for it.

I pretty much agree with all yours Scott, we have similar taste.

Me too....all agreed but Operation Ivy....never heard anything by them. What should I start with?

Here is the quick background:

Op Ivy was formed By Jesse, Matt, Dave and Lent The King of Ska. They were just kids playing amazing punk/ska and broke up in 1989, because they were just getting too famous too fast.

For the record, Matt, is Matt Freeman... sound familiar?

how about if I told Lent The King of Ska's name was Tim... Tim Armstrong.

That's right Op Ivy is the precursor of Rancid!

Go download the S/T release (it is all of their releases on one cd), my favorite songs are Sound System, Jaded and The Crowd.


For those of you that have never heard Op Ivy before, I am jealous... I still remember my first time hearing them!

I can't think of anything revolutionary Crass have done

they brought DIY ethics to punk rock.
punk rock bands before them relied on major labels.
Crass Records was a rolemodel for the independent record labels of the 80's.
It might seem far-fetched, but ill go out on a limb and say that without crass and crass records, there wouldnt have been a hardcore scene in america (even though crass sounds nothing like an 80's hardcore band).
or any modern DIY scenes.

crass was incredibly revolutionary.

i dont know why you guys are questioning crass' impact on punk rock.

I really feel that there were DIY ethics before Crass, I think you're over-hyping them.

they had contracts.
i could see were you could maybe make an argument regarding rough trade records (which was more like a distro sort of deal anyways).
seriously, you should do some reading up. its really interesting to read about their achievements.

i agree with them, i would just try to fit woody guthrie in there somewhere

I have a hard time adding Crass to the list... I do not credit them with the DIY attitude, every poor unsigned band has been DIY at some point... I do think they were the first to be successful as the process.

I did think about putting Crass on the list, but when I compared them to Minor Threat, I felt that all of Crass' reasons for being on the list (punk pioneer/DIY) were covered by Minor Threat too... and Crass has nothing that equals Dischord Records or Straight Edge

so long story short Crass < Minor Threat in my opinion

...and Britney completely changed the industry... she was the first artist where it was acceptable to be a musician, but not have musical talent as your main focus.

Crass Records and Peaceful Anarchism.

Im not questioning Minor Threat's influence. They were really important.
I just think crass was more important. Even though they were for different reasons.
Crass and Minor Threat were two very different bands with two very different sounds and values.

Crass had been seen as a serious threat in England.
No other punk rock band had ever recieved threats from their government.
No other punk rock band ever had their phones tapped.
The only thing that had ever happened like that was when 'God Save The Queen' had been censored on the sales charts.

What you said about poor bands may be true, but never to the extent of crass.

There would not have been any Alternative Tenticles or Dischord without the influence and relative success of Crass Records.

Plus what this thread is asking is impossible to answer.
It might almost be possible to do it just for punk rock (which is what you guys are doing) but not for music in general.

In terms of importance according to e6c:
musical respect: Minor Threat = Crass
Movement: Straight Edge > Peaceful Anarchism (straight edge can be traced to Ian, Peaceful Anarchism has many people that could claim the origins)
Record label: Dischord > Crass Records (look at the releases)
DIY: Crass > Minor Threat

dischord does have more highly regarded releases.

(although conflict's first release was on crass records)

i'm pretty sure Mighty Mighty Bosstones started before Op Ivy

Bosstones is far more ska than punk, Op Ivy took both of them, and made it fucking amazing.
