Thought it would be interesting to learn where bands are from, and considering these boards have people from all over. If you're from a small town, you can do state/province as well.
Vancouver/outskirts of Van City:
The good:
Heart Japandroids Loverboy Gob Trooper The New Pornographers Said the Whale
The Meh:
Swollen Members Mariana's Trench Faber Drive Matthew Good Band (his earlier stuff was good though) Mother Mother (they're really popular here and I've been following them for a while, can't really get into their music much)
The bad:
Theory of a Deadman Hedley Carly Rae Jepsen
And Hot Hot Heat are just a few hours away on the island, but I've never been much of a fan of them.
My bad if this topic has been done, too lazy to do a search.

There are many far better bands from Mass than Four Year Strong.

The only band I can think of from Madison is Garbage. And Butch Vig's Smart Studios is(or was since it's closed now) about 10 minutes from my house.
Other than that, I can't think of anyone from my town. But Bon Iver, Violent Femmes, and Les Paul are all Wisconsin based. And then there are like 80,000,000,000 local bands here and shows basically every night of the week.

Ok you win. Seriously is there something in the water in NJ that gives people musical talent?
Connecticut doesn't have much so I'm using the whole state:
Michael Bolton The Carpenters Hatebreed John Mayer
Those are the most notable ones that I'm aware of.

I'm from Doylestown, PA and not Philadelphia. I'll do the Doylestown area artists, because Philadelphia would take forever.
Circa Survive The Wonder Years Pink Balance and Composure Daylight Let Down Mother of Mercy The Erection Kids and to top it all off.....Justin Guarini

Can't say I've heard of any of those, but that doesn't mean much.I'll check 'em out. We don't really have much of a scene though which bums me out. And I know very few people who play music or listen to anything that's not mainstream.

I am glad my town is developing a music scene completely separate from Pittsburgh. We have rockers, we have rappers, we have country, we have Folk. We have a recording studio a friend is opening up soon, and we have plenty of bars to play at, as well as a coffee Shop.

Welcome to Middlesbrough guys...

You have so much luck to have all these famous bands coming from your town, there must be a lot more chance to see them live than here.
But I like the bands from my town too, even if it's really small (35 680 people), there's also a lot of little bands (and for those who are into industrial metal, the Young Gods comes from Fribourg)
If someone's into hardcore, this is WeSaid (the name comes from the song of the Comeback kids "Wake up dead")
And here's a beautiful song by a folk band called Jim the Barber and his Shiny Blades: https://soundcloud.com/jim-the-barber/captain-of-my-grief-mix-3
