2014 new Gaslight Anthem album news (pre-details)

man, I wish Gaslight could let go of their influences already.  Be the Gaslight Anthem, not the Neildylan Zepsteen Band.

Look forward to new music.  I have to be honest, after July and August last year, Handwritten got left behind in the dust and I never really went back to it.  Might have to play it tomorrow, I have a feeling it'll sound fresh and new to me which will be nice.  I did like it a lot, just didn't have staying power once we got into Autumn.

I still listen to the album Handwritten constantly.

I don't need a concept album, but at least an album with a theme, as on the previous records, rather than HW's comparatively random collection of tracks.

Yeah agreed about a theme. What makes "Born To Run" "Darkness On The Edge of Town" "Scarecrow" etc some of the best records of their respective artists? a theme.

I would disagree that Handwritten was a random set of tracks given that the vast majority of the songs speak of relationships and love or heartbreak between two people. I'd say the only track that doesn't fit is the bonus track Sliver which sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm not sure how you have come to this conclusion... but we all have an opinion I guess

I know people who have this opinion and I kind of share it myself. There are a lot of disparate influences on Handwritten and it's easy to make the argument that it never quite coalesces into one cohesive album.

But I think the point is that it does coalesce thematically. It might not coalesce sonically, but most of the songs are telling very similar sorts of stories about love and, particularly, notions of romance.

Well yeah but that's most Gaslight songs in general, though, right? And even then it's less than it was before (Handwritten being the letter to fans, Here Comes My Man being a sort of character study, Keepsake about his father, Too Much Blood a song about songwriting).

And yeah, I was more talking about the sound of the album than the subject matter.

So long as it's not rushed too quickly. Nevertheless, after the latest songs like Misery and Halloween I'm extremely excited for this record

Yeah I agree Misery and Halloween were very relatable and hard-hitting songs lyrically for me, I just hope the next album isn't as heavy because I think it would kill me haha! I wonder if Misery and Halloween are an indication of the sound of the next album or not. Brian's writing seems to be getting darker, which brings out some amazing music, however I hope they still retain the romantic side of their sound. I always look at Casanova, Baby! and The Spirit Of Jazz as hopeful, upbeat, romantic tracks and I hope they will continue to write songs in a similar vein.

I personally love the darker songs of Gaslight, Then again, I do like a couple of the lighter songs.b The lyrically darker ones I mean.

I would love to hear Misery live once. I know that's very unlikely to happen but if it ever happens it would make me very very happy. Or sad ... but's that's OK then.

personally I loved handwritten, I will never tire of howl, mae and handwritten.
New album very exciting  im sure it will be great everything they have ever released has been quality. Man i love Gaslight

This! Hearing Misery live is a dream. After the talk of it today I've gone and listened to it tonight and it just blows me away.

^^THIS. I love the lyrics to both those songs for the same reason. It'd be cool if songs like that were on the next album but I also hope that there's some optimism as well, like you said. I don't want them to turn into The National. I really like them but I can only listen to them once in awhile because they depress me  But having an overall darker tone, kinda like Elsie did, could be really cool!

Yeah, I am looking forward to this CD so much. Oddly enough, their CD's come out at the time when I need the songs the most.

Are you sure you understood that correctly? I remember Brian said the new album will be recorded in january/february. A january release sounds very early. That would mean they are recording right now and that is very unlikely cause they are still touring.

Man I hope it's January though I doubt that its going to be that soon!

I believe Brian said that they have booked studio time in February to record the new album so I'm guessing Brendan O'Brien was talking about the album being recorded in January/February. This is how they have worked for the past two albums so I'm guessing they will do the same. Obviously I would love it if it was to be released in January but I guess it will be unlikely.
