According to Brian, TGA are writing songs for a new album (and they even know what they want it to sound like), which they hope to record with Brendan O'Brien in the winter.  The planned Brian Fallon solo album, and any new Horrible Crowes work, has hence been put on hold.

Promises promises...

Though I'll be the first to say it: I wonder why they'd go with Brendan O'Brien again. There are so many talented producers out there I hoped they'd move on to someone else.

I think it makes sense to do another with O'Brien. They obviously have a good working relationship with him and he has helped push Gaslight's sound on with Handwritten. I guess it's like Brian said he's right for the phase that Gaslight are in right now as Ted Hutt was for '59 and AS. I can't wait to hear what they come up with for album #5 as in the interview he seems really determined to prove to people just how good his band is and how much potential they have. I think that kind of motivation is going to make for some really great songs!

You make a good point and I think it'd be nice to hear someone else's touch on the record as well, but it sounds like they're gonna try again to make a hit album (also maybe not the best idea) and in that case, O'Brien's a pretty good choice.

I don't think we will get Handwritten the sequel as with every release the band have put out they have had a different approach/sound to the previous album. They have always said themselves that you can't make the same record twice. When they made American Slang that was very different to The '59 Sound even though they used the same producer. I'm sure album #5 will be have it's own style just like all four of Gaslight's previous records.

This forum is amusing me more than usual today, haha. You're right Christophe they're good at changing things up while not losing what makes them great regardless of the producer. I should have more faith, they haven't disappointed me yet!

Guess I'm just more concerned because I wouldn't have minded a 59 Sound 2 or an American Slang 2, but as much as I love HW I'd rather hear something grittier next time.

Yeah I know what you mean Shelby I guess I wouldn't have minded a '59 Sound mark 2 just because it is such a great album. I found it quite hard at first to adjust to the new style of songs and production on American Slang after The '59 Sound. I'm just glad that we are all starting to talk about the potential of new material after what seems like an age since Handwritten was released! It's been pretty quiet on the forum for a while. Glad this new interview has given us something to talk about.

I have a feeling that based on Brian's talk about a chip on his shoulder and how he thinks the band can be huge means that the album isn't gonna be "the weird one" that the Rolling stone interview from like last year said it might be.

really bummed about sticking with the O'Brian. I think he deserves a lot of the blame for shifting Gaslight from having songs that were heartfelt and pure to generic middle of the road rock and roll. Would rather they mix it up again or at least back to Ted. I'm just not sure I can get really excited for another O'Brian gaslight record after how disappointing HW was.

I feel like 45, Handwritten, Keepsake, Too Much Blood, Biloxi Parish, Mae, and National Anthem are some of the most heartfelt songs Gaslight has put out.
Songs like Howl or Desire are the ones which remind me of older Gaslight, and also seem like the most breezy and laid back songs on the album.
If I have a complaint with Handwritten, it's that the songs can sometimes be too serious and intense.

I mean, so 45, Keepsake, Biloxi and Mae (alongside Howl and Blue Dahlia) are the good songs on the album.

Handwritten and TMB are too egoistical in my opinion to be enjoyable. National Anthem has some good parts, but also just feels like it tries too hard.

I have never warmed to National Anthem...compared to She Loves You and We Did It When We Were Young, it just does nothing for me at all.

i'm not that happy with brandon as producer

it's like he gave HW a kind of polished style which made the songs lack emotion in my opinion.

And things like he counseled alex not to play melodies through the whole song ( alex talked about this as a positive thing in an interview) make me think brandon made some little modifications on everything so the sound was more mainstream - the guys are happy with this so i'm totally ok with there decision but i think i would have liked it better if they would have chosen Ted or another producer.

I hope the next record will be rawer again and we'll here more riffs of alex like they were on 59s and AS

I'm sort of gutted about it but I'm glad that he is also wanting to focus on Gaslight at the same time. The way I'm looking at it ...its a win-win situation with whatever we get from Brian (whether solo, HC or TGA)

Hmm, I never thought about how Alex changed his style but that explains a lot. That definitely made it more mainstream, and while there are upsides to that, I think it's better to do things that make you more unique as a band so you don't blend in. That said, I was really impressed with Alex's work on the album, so again, it's not necessarily a bad choice but maybe he could switch back and fourth between the old and new style?

I think the danger in using someone like O'Brien is that a younger band like them could trust his opinion a little too much. Not saying that happened, just saying I wouldn't be surprised if they put some of their great ideas aside because of his opinion when maybe they shouldn't have.

I was looking forward to a solo project more than anything else. But still any new release is a good release.

The thing Brian said about Keepsake and Brendan's suggestion...I can't even imagine the song the way Brian described it initially. Clearly there's a lot of merit to what he's saying and Brendan's contributions are significant.

I'm not really sure how to explain it, but the way O'Brien works with bands he seems to hit that sweet spot where it feels as sharp as a toothache or a pain in your gums, and he just works that spot until you're covered in amazing hook filled rock

I agree and there's no doubt O'Brien is a pro and knows how to make songs sound awesome. But that doesn't mean there aren't times when it'd be better to not listen to his opinion. That doesn't mean his opinion is wrong, he just has a very clear style and not every song should follow that style in my opinion.

Again, I'm not saying that the guys ever listened to him when they shouldn't have, but as polished and catchy as the songs on HW sound, I still think the rougher sound of the 59 sound can be better. Maybe not for every song, and maybe not if you want a song to top the charts, but sometimes less polished is better. I'm just saying I hope the guys listen to their instincts even if they don't match what O'Brien's advising them to do.

brendan o brien has a rough track record with me. to mind, the only good record he's produced is magic. maybe ted hutt is busy but i'd go for him over brendan any day
