The Hold Steady

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but are there any hold steady fans on here?

Seeing them for the first time tomorrow night, can't wait!

I quite like the Hold Steady, I can see how Gaslight fans would, it's kind of similar.

took me FOREVER to get into them. i couldn't get into his speech-vocals for the longest time. then i picked up Stay Positive and that changed everything

I actually got into their catalog backwards (Stay Positive first, then Boys & Girls, etc.) so maybe that helped with the instant obsession with them. All I know is that in less than four months they've climbed to 1320 plays on my last.fm which is kind of a lot.

I was exactly the same, i only heard stay positive about 2 months ago, then within a week i bought all of them. I'm a little obsessed lol

I got Boys & Girls when it first came out, because I heard the name about a lot. The vocals really put me off at first, but they've totally grown on me. I need to check out their other stuff sometime.

Stay Positive is super rad.

Saw them for the first time last night, probably one of the best bands i've seen live, my love for them keeps growing!

Love this band. I prefer boys and girls to stay positive.

yeah, i wasn't able to get into this band til i listened to Stay Positive, but i went back to Boys and Girls, and it's a lot better. SP has some of their best songs, but BaGiA is a lot better overall, with some very good songs on it as well

thier earlier stuff is really good too, stay positive just had some wierd stuff goin on where i didnt care for the sounds.

yeah, the harpsichord on the third track (i'm blanking on the name for some reason) was a bit odd

also, i have 2 really good recordings that I made of them that i'll post soon.

Will be seeing them for the 5th time on June 7, in D.C. at the 930 Club.

I'd say get Boys & Girls In America first, it's a bit more direct than the others, even Stay Positive. After that though, once you're hooked, Separation Sunday will become your favourite album. Ever. It's astonishingly good; lyrically incredible (they are, in my opinion, the best lyricists out there at the moment), tight as hell, dense, intelligent... christ it's a good record.

Great band saw them in Manchester one of the best gigs ever , the best music to have a beer to.

I'm a big THS fan too. These two bands are keeping my faith in rock and roll alive.

I must mention Almost Killed Me their debut album. It rocks in a very similar way to Sink Or Swim (only with some classic rock style solos)

Brian could do a real number on their tracks Most People Are DJ's and the ballad Certain Songs. And THS would rip We Came To Dance a new one (in the nicest possible way)

Franz left the band, bummer....there is always World/Inferno Friendship Society and Guinol!
