I've never understood that line either. Thought it may link to comradeship or friendship or something. Not sure if Brian's a Dire Straits fan. He could well be.

I always just thought it symbolized a line of men linking arms or like a troop of soldiers- "brothers in arms"

Heh, I hope it's not a Dire Straits reference. Decent band but I can't stand the Brothers in Arms album.

A little embarrassing to say maybe, but I got really emotional hearing this song live.

Shouldn't be embarrassing, whenever I hear it, I always stop and just go "Wow." It's that type of song. When I hear it live, I think it'll be amazing!

It's a song about love.
The love for your friends, the love for your heroes and the love for your woman.
I was walking home last night singing this song at the top of my lungs and all the people coming out of the bars gave me funny looks.

I already saw the "Little Eden" Springsteen reference post, but I found this interesting in that Brian is a fan of the Bouncing Souls. It's from Amazon.com's biography for them. It's in reference to The Gold Record, which came out in 2006:

Says bassist Bryan Kienlen, "This record was essentially conceived and
written in Kate Hiltz's basement in Asbury Park NJ, and somehow the
spirit of that old town has possessed it's content, both lyrically and
musically. I can't wait for the world to hear this one, it's special for
sure, but we'll let it speak for itself."

Early this year the band converged once again in Kate's basement for a
couple of intense weeks of writing and hanging out. They took the old
show out on the road for a couple of dates just for the fun of it and
then spent some time in Greg's garage in LA soaking in the sun and the
company. Technology got involved with mboxes and pro-tools and
filesharing during the time spent apart. And then, like 10 years had
never passed, everyone moved into Little Eden (fancy name for Kate's
house in Asbury Park). The mornings were filled with the familiar sounds
of showers, toasters, and coffee. The days spent in the basement,
home-cooked dinners, evenings by the fire with acoustic guitars. And the
songs tell the story of a family returning to its roots and talking
about what really has mattered all of this time.

I wonder if they called it that after the Springsteen lyric, as well.

Perhaps, but I always just assumed it was Little Eden because NJ is the Garden State. So I don't know if Bruce came up with that or not.

I always wondered if that was a Tom Waits reference, and that's actually what I was gonna ask. Has anyone ever asked Brian if that's supposed to be a reference to him?

Knowing that Brian is a massive Tom Waits fan. I am pretty sure its a reference to him.

Anyone now listening to Tom Waits, is seriously missing out

That's what first made me sign up here; the audio section. I've been reading a lot of the song meaning threads, as well. It's great to find out little things about all their songs. It gives you a whole new respect for Brian's lyrics.
