OK - so I was lucky back several years ago when I stumbled on this little known band called The Gaslight Anthem right after '59 Sound was released. And now TGA and Bruce are my two all-time favorite bands (The Horrible Crowes, too).

Unfortunately, the state of music right now does not reconcile well with my personal tastes. Some of my favorite bands beyond the 3 previously mentioned are bands like Yellowcard, Simple Plan, All-American Rejects (everything before their last album), Sum 41, older Taking Back Sunday, O.A.R., older Fall Out Boy. The Lumineers have grown on me (while I f'n hate Mumford & Sons).

So what I'm asking for is band recommendations based on my [odd] musical tastes. And I'm not talking about older bands like The Bouncing Souls or The Hold Steady. I want to get that feeling again that I had when I stumbled upon a small up-and-coming band like TGA.

Any suggestions??

If you don't know them already I'd recommend checking out SHARKS.
I think they have some similarities to Gaslight (like their awesome lead guitar work).

I echo moreblue's suggestion. They are the most exciting band I have discovered since Gaslight. Still operating under the radar really but have so much talent for such a young band. Definitely check Sharks out. Smile

Maybe you will like - if you don't already know 'em - the Wonder Years. Their recent album "The Greatest Generation" is absolutely remarkable Wink (uptempo pop-punk, or how the band calls their style: realist pop-punk)

Someone else would say these if I didn't but definitely check out On the Impossible Past by The Menzingers and Celebration Rock by Japandroids. And I agree with the above about Sharks, specifically their album No Gods.

Looks like I'll be busy checking out some of these bands this weekend. Looking forward to it.

Thanks, everyone! And, by all means, keep the recommendations coming!

The Front Bottom - (if you don't already know them) these guys from jersey got a good amont of hype recently. just had one listen to there new record and it's fantastic http://vimeo.com/67069174

King Cannons - Like the best rock coming from australia these days. sounds like Bruce Springsteen meets Joe strummer and they have fun with a Bongo and jam around with gaslight anthem https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xq1lud_king-cannons-too-young_music#.Ua-8Q-CySII

Timeshares.
Aggressive, poppy, all the dudes sing, they have a church bell on their drum kit. Everytime I see them they get even better. I've seen em about 17-18 times at this point. This is the BEST band out there. Reminds me of the time i saw gaslight the at asbury lanes every time i see them. Do you know how great it is to relive that show once every few months? It's absolutely remarkable. New album out in 2014. Not to mention they are some straight up great guys.

Captain, We're Sinking.
Fronted by Greg from The Menzingers brother, Bobby, this band rules hard. They are a lot like Timeshares and Menzingers combined. New album rules. Check it out.

State Lines
Like Saves The Day. New album is among the top 5 from this year for me.

I've recently found myself spinning some of my favorite underrated and under-appreciated records of the 1980s:

(1) Brian Wilson, Self-Titled. Hard to believe that his first solo record didn't come out until 1988. This record is flawless IMO. The critics agreed but I still think this record is under-appreciated.

(2) The Everly Brothers, EB '84. These guys were an institution in the 60's (think "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Susie") and then reunited to release this killer contemporary record in the 80's, which includes a guest spot from Paul McCartney and a sick cover of Dylan's Lay Lady Lay.

(3) Paul McCartney, Give My Regards to Broad Street Soundtrack. This was the soundtrack to a box office bomb that Sir Paul made. I love this record though. It's got lounge act versions of Beatles songs and some great McCartney originals.

(4) The Clash, Sandinista! I feel like this record often gets overshadowed by London Calling. Over the course of its six sides, there are a couple misses here but its highs are amazing (see, The Sound of Sinners).

(5) Bon Jovi, New Jersey. This is obviously not in the under-appreciated category given how many millions of copies it's sold but I think it's way underrated. This record is the perfect dose of cowboy glitter.

Well if you like hardcore I think John Coffey from Netherlands are going on their way up right now. I think if you mix Refused and Foo Fighters with just some basic rock n roll you get this band. I would think if they were from UK they would be bigger allready, but we'll see:

And another guy from Netherlands closer to TGA style is Tim Vantol. I think you could say hes kinda Frank Turner from Holland. But still of course he dont sound like Frank. He sounds like Tim Vantol. If that makes sense. IMO this guy should definitely be in the next Revival Tour when it comes to Europe, or like opening act for Frank Turner, TGA or somebody pretty big like that in this "genre". For whole European tour or something like that:

I'd rather compare Tim Vantol to Chuck Ragan instead of Frank Turner... He has been the support act for Chuck Ragan (at least at one show in The Netherlands).

Well thats true. But lyrically I hear more Frank. Same themes and stuff like "Id rather end up in hell, with many of my friends, than lay down in heaven with full of regrets" or "If I had a choice, I dont need another second, give me five more minutes for packing and Ill be gone".

John Coffey are great, but its shame that when I saw them at Groezrock the sound was so bad I barely recognised the songs I allready knew :/...

I've got to agree on the lyrics, that does sound much more like Frank than Chuck.

Too bad for the one John Coffey show you've seen. Those guys do know how to party, but for the audience to party along you do need a proper sound.
