| Sorry to hear that man, breaking up sucks.
One of my really good mates broke up with her boyfriend on the weekend, they have a kid and a house together so shes taking it pretty hard. She hadn't heard Gaslight before so I recommended that. Obviously not the case here.
These might be suitable:
Androgynous - The Replacements - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfHrIkftZzA How soon is now - The Smiths - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5HpeA_WSo Love will tear us apart - Joy Division (Classic break up song) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yTIpcwBTTs
Edit - forgot this: Pain In My Heart - Otis Redding - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNzsmvfyBto
I don't know how 'sad' these songs are but to me they've got a real eerie feeling. Especially that Replacements song.

| Dustin and the Furniture - In the Snow
It's not utterly depressing but it's basically a break up album.

| Some Farside/Gameface/Sensefield would be a good idea I guess, especially I Hope You´re Unhappy by Farside ... Somebody Save This Boy by Gameface/Jeff Caudill is great, too ...

| Your New Twin Sized Bed - Death Cab For Cutie, certainly a sad song although hope it wouldn't hit too hard!

| on the Mike Hale note, listen to "Easy Come Easy Go". and listen to Tim Barry's "Cardinal In Red Bed", or his songs "Exit Wounds" and "Tacoma" if you're in a more angry mood
oh, and "Musical Cliche #53" by Max Stern (available on www.myspace.com/maxstern) and "Other Side of Lonesome (aka Lonesome Dogtown Nights)" by Lucero

| "Radio" - by Alkaline Trio, although I MUCH prefer Hot Water Music's version of it.
"The Best Deceptions" - by Dashboard Confessional
and pretty much anything by Elliot Smith
and thanks to nuwbuddy for the City and Colour tip. Big fan of Alexisonfire, so more of Dallas Green's stuff is awesome.

| im gonna second the references to anything by the Cure (particularly their earlier records), Elliott Smith, Azure Ray- "November," and "Radio" although I also agree that HWM's cover is better. Also a lot of Smiths- "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me," "Asleep," etc. i also like Brand New's "Deja Entendu," and Wolfsheim- it's a little different, but you might like it.
also a small bit of completely unsolicited advice- while i am also the kind of person that likes to wallow in sad music and immerse myself in the mood in certain situations such as the one you're in, don't let yourself get too depressed! maybe we should lock this thread up so you dont get too caught up in the depressing, sad music haha.
if you want a really depressing movie about love, "Closer" is excellent. The Damien Rice song at the beginning and end of the movie is perfect. Or my personal favorite, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."

| Sorry to hear that. I'm a glutton for sad music. I think my top sad songs are Motion Picture Soundtrack and True Love Waits, both by Radiohead.
I agree with Steph about the song from Closer - it's called The Blower's Daughter, and it's gut-wrenching.
I'm not sure if you'd be into Stars at all, they're a Canadian band that I love, and they have a lot of sad stuff. One More Night is good, as is Your Ex-Lover Is Dead.
Someone mentioned Death Cab already. What Sarah Said is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. Guh.
I Hope Your Heart Runs Empty and The Grace, both by Neverending White Lights.
City and Colour is also good, as a few have mentioned - just a side note, too, that he's amazing live, I saw him a few months ago. (Oh, and the vocals on "The Grace," the song mentioned above, are done by him)
That's a hell of a lot of depressing music.

| i don't know if i'd call it "sad" music, but when i'm feelin down, i listen to the blues. i don't have a huge collection of the stuff, but i really love The Black Keys' EP "Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough". Kimbrough was a pretty awesome bluesman, and they did some killer covers of their stuff. i've heard some people say that you've got to listen to the blues to get over the blues. i'm not sayin, i'm just sayin... | |

That's a great EP and both Junior and The Keys are awesome. I made a thread for these guys a while back, no one really seemed to pick up even though I did link a song from that EP.

| Jesus by Brand new is a pretty moody song , also check out Frightened Rabbit they have a lot of relationship songs that tend to be dark but have a light at the end of the tunnel element. | |

| I know this is an old thread but it's just been bumped...I'm gonna recommend 'Hate Me' by Blue October. Not specifically end of a romantic relationship sad, but morbid nonetheless. | |

that's all i can think off of the top of my head. Wow old thread but none the less City & Colour is where you want to be, "Sleeping Sickness" "Body In a Box" great songs. Obviously Brand New is a great selection too, cliche or not "Jesus Christ" is the deepest song they've ever put together and absolutely perfect for feeling down. This song is dead on though for feeling terrible its a magnificent in that regard: Honorary Title - Everything I Once Had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-0jo9ILIxY And despite how your gonna feel about what I say right now this song really hits the spot when I'm feeling terrible and in some way making me feel better. So if you feel so inclined give it a shot (my reputation might be on the line here). Cartel - Minstrels Prayer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSapinBOGw0
