I bet! The time difference between where I live and CA complicates things sometimes, and it's only three hours.

Agreed! Why would I want to watch a bunch of stick figures walk around in bathing suits and high heels, unable to answer even the simplest of questions? My brain would fry. How can beauty pageants still be going on in 2012?

A couple of people from my school (mind you, I go to a women's college that is super progressive and feminist) entered Miss California. One of them is using it as a platform to promote her cause. I read through an article written about them for the paper and I was completely astounded as to why they wanted to enter. All smart ladies, bringing a new view to a seemingly anti-feminist thing such as a beauty pageant. Definitely changed how I looked at things.

That's actually pretty cool. I know there are always exceptions, like your friends, but I just have a big problem with the whole idea of judging people based on how they look. The world already does that, why make it worse?

Yeah, when we were talking about the article in my journalism class, we had a huge debate about it -- like, how do we, as a paper for a women's college, write something up about something like Miss California when a good majority of the school canceled classes for students to participate in Occupy Oakland? Our Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program is one of the most influential things on campus, so a lot of students -- myself included -- were basically saying, "Wut? o_O" I don't personally know the three women from my school entering, but I don't think it's my place to judge their actions, I guess. Cause I don't know them personally, so who am I to say or judge what they want to do? I think their heart's in the right place, though ("The chance to do good work and have their voice be heard is more empowering than any amount of problematic gender performance could be disempowering," was a line from the article my classmate wrote). It's a problematic part of society, yeah, but I guess if the exceptions are trying to deconstruct the problem by making it their own platform to educate, then who knows? Maybe someone will learn a thing or two.

I suppose I'm just applying the mantra I try to adhere to when it comes to dealing with people: It's your life, do what you want as long as it's not harmful and you're fully aware of everything regarding what you're doing.

i used to watch it when I was little because I liked the fashion aspect of it. I tried to do that tonight and wanted to punch whoever was making me listen to that "La la la la la YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE..." whatever that song is.

You make some good points, Mac. I have watched these beauty pageants in the past and some of the women do have causes that they are trying to bring awareness to, but so many of them just come off as stupid or shallow and that bothers me too much to watch now. But I agree, to each his/her own. As long as they aren't hurting themselves or anyone else, I shouldn't have a problem with it.
