| I can't find the article anymore, but I read an interesting critique on the gaslight anthem. Basically the author just felt like music critics focus on the lyrics while ignoring that the band just plays standard throwback guitar rock. It becomes a giant circle jerk of romantics who love the lyrics while ignoring that the band is a couple years of guitar lessons ahead of them. He didn't think that they were a bad band by any means, but he thought that they were over-hyped and were just kind of average who can get by because they have the throwback look that people fall in love with. | |

That's some pretty valid criticism. Honestly if not for Fallon's excellent lyrics I wouldn't be half as invested in The Gaslight Anthem.

| Ehhhh....I rarely see rave reviews for Gaslight. Generally it's fairly middling, 3 1/2 out of 5 type of thing. Arcade Fire consistently gets 5 out of 5 for pretty much every album they've put out and they're pretty mediocre, in my opinion. Lyrically they're nothing special, their melodies are forgettable and their songs tend to meander about, and both singers are very weak and passive.
Compared to Gaslight, who rightfully get praise for their lyrics (although still I've seen many, many critics scoff at them), have fantastic melodies and songwriting chops, and Brian is a very strong vocalist, especially on record.
Maybe if Gaslight added three multi-instrumentalists and a warbling goofy-looking chick they'd get better reviews.

| Yeah, at least some thought has been put into that criticism. It's more valid than half the other rubbish about the band I've read. At least it's not, "they're trying to be Bruce" or "I hate them because they turned their back on Punk." - Harbortown wrote:

Same here, Brian's writing is definitely their best quality and I'm sure a lot of fans will say the same.

It's something I don't understand at all. I don't care about the level of a band as long as it makes me feel as good as TGA...

| In general rock music criticism is a fairly pointless endeavor. It very rarely actually takes the quality of the songwriting into consideration. It's mostly about the general sound or direction an artist takes.
Here's an example of what I'm talking about: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/10251-ode-to-ochrasy/
This is a review for what I consider to be one of the greatest rock 'n' roll albums of all time, Mando Diao's Ode To Ochrasy. The reason? The songs are all incredible and they have the best 1-2 singer combination since Lennon/McCartney. But most of that review, as you can see, is talking about the "evolution" of the band and where they go from there.
Is it new? Yes. Why? Because the songs are new. Dress the songs up however you want. The only thing that matters is how good the song is. I like some more hipsterish bands, but there's a reason The National is great and Arcade Fire is okay at best. One writes great songs I wish I'd written and the other consistently writes stuff that I would leave on the cutting room floor.

| Does anybody here exercise?
I've done the whole gym thing on and off for a few years now and I've come to terms with the fact that it's not for me, it simply bores me to tears. My next fitness challenge will be to learn to run without having to stop every thirty seconds because I'm out of breath. I do like running, I'm just really bad at it, so if I could make a habit out of it that'd be fantastic.

| I'm the exact same...going to the gym bores the hell out of me. Running is much better if its a good place and I have headphones. But yeah, in general, exercise really is a no go for me. | |

| I've never gone regularly to a gym in my life and I'm in pretty good shape, if I do say so myself. Just run on your own and do body resistance exercises. It works, trust me. | |

| I go to the gym three times a week since more than a year, I don't really have choice because even if I pay attention to what I eat, I take weight because of health problems. I don't really like it, but with music it's ok.

| I do physical labor for 4 hours a day 5 days a week, so I really don't need a gym. I probably burn half of what Bruce burns during a concert calorie wise. | |

There are apps you can download that will track how far you've walked (I use Map My Walk). Or look into public pools for swimming... maybe even see if that insane Crossfit thing is for you. Or maybe you have asthma and just need an inhaler so you don't get out of breath. I was using the elliptical but found the Arc Trainer burns calories faster. Watching TV/videos on my iPod while working like a hamster helps with the boring factor. My current project is ongoing. It's figuring out what meals fill me up so my stomach will STFU for longer.
