It lets the audience know that although I am not excessively excited to take the picture, at least I have the courtesy to not look like I'm about to receive my death sentence. I am now poster #3 on this website, and to celebrate I hereby announce that I am the first poster on the forum to set up a picture gallery. Basically it's a tribute to my greatness. You can't really see anything until an admin has approved the pictures, but still!
