| I selected "boxer" as my favorite song on this album. However, I have a difficult time choosing between "boxer", "old haunts", "orphans", "bring it on", and "the spirit of jazz". They are definitely my favorites amongst the album. It is unfortunate that they're all arranged near the end of the album though, with exception to "bring it on", as it makes the first half of the album watered down and by the time I get to track 6 (which is when it picks up, in my opinion) sometimes I have already lost interest. I've found that I can get around that though by simply rearranging the tracks to my liking.
Overall, while a very difficult task, I rank the songs as follows:
American Slang- 6.5/10 Stay Lucky- 8/10 Bring It On- 9/10 The Diamond Church St. Choir-7.5/10 The Queen Of Lower Chelsea-8/10 Orphans- 10/10 Boxer- 10/10 Old Haunts- 10/10 The Spirit Of Jazz- 9.5/10 We Did It When We Were Young-7/10
The "American Slang" album as a whole, I would give an 8.5/10, which means it's a "really good" album overall, but just a "good" album for Gaslight. To put that in perspective, I personally would rank Sink or Swim, The 59 Sound, and Senor and the Queen as 10/10's, all three of them!

| Old Haunts jams! Orphans too. But really love the entire album!! Cant see how "We Did It When We Were Young" could be someone's fav tho! Good closer but a little slow for my liking! | |

| Sup with almost everyone disliking American Slang? I think it's a great album opener, great lyrics, not that impressive musically, but really packs a punch imo. | |

| Nowadays I would say my favorite is Stay Lucky.
And the thing with American Slang is it's just the weakest song. Not bad necessarily.

Agreed. Old Haunts is my new fav at the moment. also We Did It When We Were Young is probably one of the best closers ever.

| After my 4th full listen with the album, I'm ready to give my vote to Spirit of Jazz. Stuff like Boxer and TDCSC are good, but TSoJ is near perfect. | |

| It's really tough to pick. My top three are "Diamond Church Street Choir", "Spirit of Jazz", and "Bring it On". If I had to go with one, it would be "Diamond Church Street Choir" because it's so damn catchy, but the bridge is still incredibly moving (where "Bring it On" skews heavier and "Spirit of Jazz" is a little too smooth where it could have more soul). | |
