| alright, i don't wanna hear any of that "they have a punk mentality" stuff. straight up. in your mind, do you see Nirvana as a punk band?
i never considered them punk, always thought of them more as a hard rock band, but i've heard them labeled punk or post-punk several times, and i can see where people get that
personally though, they are not a punk band
what do you think? | |

Haha. Ironic this as I was listening to them before. In my opinion they are hard to classify. But they are not a punk band- I think they are, as you said, more of a hard rock band (even if there are 'punk' elements). So I vote no. |

i concur. if youre speaking of punk as a mentality, you could make a case for nirvana being punk. as a genre on music, they are grunge.

| What is 'punk rock'? Impossible to give an exact answer, but here is a general rule: punk rock refers to any music that challenges the musical or other establishment status quo at the time of it's release. When Nevermind was released it went COMPLETELY against the status quo at that time, as we were stuck with bloated GNR songs (November Rain) or hot-rod bands like Motley Crue / Poison. Not only did Nirvana challenge them musically, but also, AND IMPORTANTLY, in terms of attidude. Their songs were simple, hard hitting, lyrically meaningless, just raw angst and emotion.
Listening to bleach, Incesticide or in utero their sound is undeniably (imo!) punk. Those albums are raw, unpolished, angst ridden and often flout conventional song writing (Ape, Francis Bean, etc).
Actually in utero was SO raw (produced by Albini) that it wasn't even going to be released in it's originally recorded form. The record label wouldn't release it because it was too 'uncommercial' - but to be fair, it seems as though the band had a few other issues with the recordings as well.
As for Nevermind, what matters is that Kurt himself HATED that album and found it way too produced. That is why I always laugh when people positvely associate Butch Vig and Cobain. Cobain hated the album that got produced, and all other albums sought to go right against that grain.
"Nirvana intended the record (IN UTERO) to be significantly divergent from the polished production of its previous album Nevermind (1991). "
Cobain said in Come as You Are, "Looking back on the production of Nevermind, I'm embarrassed by it now. It's closer to a Mötley Crüe record than it is a punk rock record."[17]

EDIT - And don't let the name grunge fool you - it meant, originally with Nirvana, 'punk rock band from Seattle' and then came to mean all the other mediocre bands that followed.

Agreed on not being possible to put punk in a box but......most of your points above could be easily attributed to any emerging genre. Gangsta rap could then be punk. - Kropotkin wrote:

Incesticide is just b sides etc so not exactly a cohesive work. As for Bleach , if it had a production...let alone a good one then mebbe a different story. - Kropotkin wrote:

The name Albini isn't synonymous with "raw" he records bands as they are which can sometimes sound flat as a fart! haven't heard the Albini produced version but I have read that the band didn't like it massively either. - Kropotkin wrote:

Utter utter Balderdash! (although the term was used to sell a lot of very mediocre records,)Grunge was an Onomatopoeic term for a particular sound characterised by many seattle/portland bands. ie Green River (precurser to Mudhoney) early Soundgarden and Bleach era nirvana all who used heavy distortion(see the mudhoney record Superfuzz Bigmuff) and takes influences from bands such as MC5 , Stooges and further afield bands such as Can and the Krautrock scene. In short Punk Rock.........I think not!

Many a good point my mate!
Gangsta Rap ha punk elements, it's true, but is not in the rock'n'roll genre ... we could call it runk music if you like!
The main issue for me is whether punk needs to be political or not, in which case Nirvana would be borderline since other than tracks like RAPE ME they didn't really get into politics at all.
In the world of rock'n'roll, punk music is that music that challenges the status quo, that is a breath of fresh air, that is angry, anti-commercial, and raw. Nirvana was all of that. Cobain hated his commercialism and did contradict himself on many an occasion .... part of his punk attitude!
In terms of disagreement I'll use an old Arabic saying: "You are probably right and I am probably wrong."

| It's impossible to ever "correctly" label music, because every single person has a different mind and opinion. So, just stop doing it! Who cares if something is "punk" or not? If you don't like something, don't listen to it. |

| I wouldn't say they're punk but then again I wasn't around when they arrived. I don't really think it really matters either, they're kickass, I don't consider their 'tag' to be that important.
On a slightly different note, I really need to get me a few biographies since you're all talking about them. I feel left out! =P
