Any way you can go in August? That's festival season in Edinburgh and it's terrific.

I was thinking about how much Gaslight has changed over the years looking at the dynamics of the band onstage. They started out as this scrappy punk band who built a really good live reputation because of their energy, tending to get by more on enthusiasm and earnest songwriting rather than pure skill. Then, after Senor and the Queen, there was this shift where the enthusiasm remained, but now it was filtered through this lens of classic rock and soul music that led up to the '59 Sound. They still had that punk edge at that point, but now there was the old school element in the mix with all the references and Brian testing out being more of a traditional, charismatic showman. This was the band at their most charming. Then American Slang came out, and this is the time when I initially became a real fan (I had listened to and enjoyed The '59 Sound album at the point but I wasn't sure if they were gonna be a one album wonder or something like that until AS). I loved the reworked guitar approach, the arrangements, the leads, and Brian's improved vocal work - it made really made me appreciate the band on a different level. It's so funny to think that the first time I listened to it, I barely liked it (because I was probably comparing it to the '59 Sound), but now it's my favorite Gaslight album. Those songs had a lot of swagger and poetic sadness, and I believe they hit a new peak as a live band around this time as well, especially based on footage at shows like Hammersmith in London. Powerful. I guess you could view Handwritten as sort of a shift since it was their first major label album, but really when I was listening to it today I'd say Handwritten is really just an update and expansion on the '59 Sound Gaslight archetype. It seemed like they were trying to summarize what they thought was best about them up to that point in that one record. A lot of the songs on it are some of the most passionate and emotional Gaslight material that exists, which is something I appreciate. Obviously there was some controversy and mixed reviews about their live show around this time, but when I saw them in Ventura in 2013 promoting Handwritten, they were flawless. Any negativity around that time is probably just a result of our high standards as fans, mixed with Brian's turmoil at that time. Which leads us to Get Hurt! Like many of you I really appreciated the embrace of the darkness and the (in hindsight, relatively conservative) experimentation of this album - if they put out another '59 Sound or Handwritten type album, I would definitely not feel as good about the direction of the band as I did after hearing Get Hurt. I actually have this theory that Gaslight albums will trade off between sounding more like "classic" Gaslight records, followed by an album that's a little different in some way. I'm glad they are starting to take advantage of the fact that they're now a five piece and they've all improved a lot as musicians. I think it gives them more breathing room to create more nuance and unique instrumentation than before both live and in the studio. So I guess I'm excited about the future of the band! Well I guess that's my little unsolicited state of the Gaslight address. Thanks for reading if you didn't "tl;dr" that shit
Well put. Thanks for taking the time to share.

I work at a call center where I caption telephone calls for the deaf and hard of hearing. It's pretty awful, but, y'know, rent and bills and food and all that jazz.
OMG. I just got cast as a core extra on a TV show that's filming in town this summer!!!!!!!! I'm gonna make a crap ton of money, get to know people in my industry, AND still have time for fun on the weekends. This is the break I needed.

First two: A month's vacation. Second two: Three weeks' vacation/ A three week long vacation.
Something like that? My German skills are pretty poor.

ugh jesus fucking christ
So I've been working at a factory since January and every month I think "alright this is probably my last month and then I'll be free" and every month those fuckers renew my contract. I'm so sick of that stupid job, it literally kills my soul. My back isn't too happy either.
I mean, I could just quit because I pretty much would be able to afford it, but I would feel really weird about that. I've never quit a job before (been fired but that's different).
OH and I decided to become a high school level history teacher! For several years I've thought "I can't be bothered with a university education, too much work" and it only took me two days at my current dickhole of a job to convince me otherwise.
