| I must be doing SOMETHING right musically. Okay, last night I decided to play ACOUSTICALLY and unplugged with my band at a PUBLIC park just doing some originals. As soon as we started, a woman fishing there (Park on the river), Said something like "Who does this song?, you should let them sing it", and threatened to call the cops on us. There were probably at least 10 other people fishing there, and no one else cared, and in fact a couple were actually listening to us. Personally, I've got at least 40 fans that like my singing and my guitar playing and will listen to it, I know I have a good voice. But yeah, after we packed up (Didn't want to have the cops come out on a STUPID waste of their time), We were just talking about our band stuff, and she KEPT STARING AT US THE ENTIRE NIGHT! They say any successful singer has critics, so I must be doing something right huh? | |

Where? How do you know this?
I know I have a good voice You actually need a bit of practice, in singing as well as guitar playing.
They say any successful singer has critics That's not really the way it works.
I don't want to shit on your parade, Jimbo, but I think you've got some pretty unrealistic views and expectations of yourself. In my opinion you write lyrics like a champ but you really need to practice your vocals and your guitar skills because they're really holding you back. Again, not saying this to be a dick, but someone needs to because someone's negative affections towards your music can't always be repelled with "well I've got this and this many fans so your criticism doesn't matter"

| The fans are locals. I've been practicing a lot lately, spending hours with the 12 string. I know my voice needs a bit of practicing, but It's not bad. I know I am nowhere near where my talent should be, but just the fact it was one person out of everyone else there complained...and the other ones who were there are not even part of my "fans" as far as I know. I am not arguing with you at all, I am just saying a couple opinions of my own, and do value yours. | |

| Just like anything else in life, don't pay too much mind to cynicism about your art and don't pay too much mind to recognition of your art. Some people get it, some don't. Some people will like it, some won't. | |

| Screaming kids in every store I was in tonight, running around like it was a playground. I don't know how parents do it or why anyone signs up for that life. | |

| Okay, Jimmy, I'm going to preface this by saying the following is not an insult or an assault.
You really need to work on your singing and guitar playing. I don't know about your original songs or whatever, but just watching your Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts cover I can immediately tell you need a lot of practice. And I'd be willing to bet you could show that video to 10 random people and at least 9 of them would say the same.
I'm not saying you should give up. I'm saying the opposite. Don't let yourself off so easy by saying "oh, every successful singer has critics so I'm doing something right." That's the "haters" bullshit that was introduced by hip-hop in the early 2000s. Sometimes they're not hating, they're just not liking what they're hearing.
If you want to improve you need to become your own biggest critic. Me personally? I will cringe when I listen to my vocals on some songs because I will zero in on what notes I was flat on, what notes I was sharp on, and what was just not sung very well. To quote the great Bono (a better singer than either you or I will ever be): There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard.
You have to take this stance if you want to make the necessary leaps and bounds in your singing and guitar playing. I've already broken down everything I've done in a song before anyone hears it. I've heard every criticism a million times in my own head when I listen to the playback again and again and again.
What this means is you should really analyze your current skill level. Don't let yourself off the hook by dismissing the views of others. Compare yourself to the singers you admire. To the guitarists you admire. Do you think you stack up? Be honest with yourself. If you aren't, someone else will and you may not have the fortitude to withstand someone being brutally honest with you. And you might quit. Which, again, is NOT what I want you to do. I don't like when people give it up.
You can listen to what I've done if you want to figure out if I'm an opinion you should trust or not. I don't claim to be Marvin Gaye singing songs written by John Lennon with Jimi Hendrix on guitar. I'm just stating my opinion, take it or leave it.

| I was sat in the sun today and decided that it was a decent time to put a bit of Sink or Swim on as I haven't listened to it from start to finish in a while. My friend then asked who it was and said he thought it was Nickelback....rest assured an argument went on for the next few hours. | |
