hmm...thinking now about this supposed to be "oddball" song...i can only hope for more like this one! this song, to me, is the perfect mix of older Gaslight and newer, their own sound. i completely love this song.
I reckon the whole album will be in this direction somewhat. I mean, to me at least, Film Noir isn't that different form the rest of 59 Sound. I hope this is the case anyway, can't get enough of the song
I look at Film Noir as the oddball song in the same way that, say, The Diamond Church Street Choir is the oddball song. They both fit on their respective albums, but I remember reacting in a pleasantly surprised way at both of those songs the first time I heard The '59 Sound/American Slang.

If anything Queen Of Lower Chelsea would be the oddball song on AS

Really enjoyed this new song and would love to see them continue down this path. Brian talked about American Slang being a lot like London Calling in how it was a band honing on its sound with slower, more confident songs (or something like that). American Slang always felt like a band in transition trying to get to that point but still not quite there yet- THIS is what I imagined a very confident, 'fully-formed sound' Gaslight Anthem sounding like (and before anybody jumps on me, I am NOT saying that AS was a bad album!). Oddly, enough I disliked American Slang a lot at first because it was the farthest departure yet from the raw punk sound of Sink or Swim, and this song might be the farthest departure yet from the original sound, but I love it. Maybe I've come to accept the days of SoS are gone, but I found it interesting that I immediately was drawn to this song.
Just picking nits, but a couple of the lines are a little awkward to me, "And I'll be with you through the dark, so that you'll not go through the dark alone" and the "eventually" lyrics in the first verse for example, but I love the chorus and the verse after the instrumental breakdown.
Maybe I'm reaching a little bit, but its almost sounds to me like Gaslight's take on the themes present in The Hold Steady's "Hurricane J."
Hurricane J:
Jessie, I'm not jokin' around I see the crowd you're hangin with and those kids don't see positive
I don't want this to stop I want you to know I don't want you to settle I want you to go Forget all the boys that you met at the harbor You're too hard already, you'll only get harder
BiloxiParish:
Who else can say that about you, baby? Who else can say that about you now? Who else can take all your blood and your curses? Nobody, I've seen you hanging around, seen you hanging around
Both narrators obviously love and care about the person they're talking to, and want to stick with them despite hanging around with the wrong crowd and tough times - the hard partying of Jessie in Hurricane J and the person "going through the dark alone" in BiloxiParish. Just a thought.

First post!
I saw them perform this in Melbourne last week and then saw them again at the Soundwave festival. By then I learnt the lyrics and I was probably the only one singing along. haha
PS I'm happy I found a Gaslight forum because they are now my favorite band.

Thanks heaps. It's pretty awesome to talk to some other gaslight fans. I personally know only 2 other fans and another 2 people who have heard of them. All my other friends are into pop and electronic music who will never understand how good The Gaslight Anthem is. Always been put down for my taste in music so it feels good to be welcome here for it (even though it is a forum dedicated to them).

That's exactly the case with me. I have one friend who likes them but nobody else I know has heard of them or is willing to give them a try. These people really are missing out on REAL music imo.

Brian said that this song was the oddball song from those he has written so far. He also said that Cowgirls was the oddball song from The '59 Sound and for me personally Cowgirls was my least favourite track on that record. What I'm trying to say is that if BiloxiParish is going to be my least favourite song on the new album it really is going to be mindblowing!

Yeah he said both Film Noir and Cowgirls were oddball songs from The '59 Sound but I felt Cowgirls to be more different than the other songs on the record.

I wasn't expecting anything Gaslight until well after the Horrible Crowes stuff had been released and then this shows up. Wow.
This song is amazingly awesome and indeed gives me a way different impression than American Slang when I heard it at first. It's hard to explain, but this song actually made my past few weeks. Damn I love these guys.

Loved American Slang at first, but it's definitely another impression entirely. The progression has been awesome to watch over the last two years or so. While I used to love the obvious nods at their idols on the first two albums by borrowing lyrics (excellently may I add) the steady move away from that gives them more of their own voice at least my opinion and I support that. Recently their Tumbling Dice cover and the revealing of BIloxiParish give them another famous classic rock comparison to add to Springsteen and the others. I just hope that when they really come on to the scene (I really don't see how they couldn't at this point) people won't cast them into Bruce's shadow and realize that they're their own band. If they weren't from Jersey they wouldn't have to deal with that write off some give them. I mean come on, what decent band out there today wouldn't credit Springsteen with having at least a slight degree of influence. Great music influences everyone, and just because they come from the same place as one of the greatest of all time doesn't mean they are just Springsteen copy-cats as I've seen Gaslight haters claim. They're influenced by what they like and dammit if they like Springsteen they like him.
Long story short, a band that still writes songs in the year 2011 like TGA does is inspiring and gives me hope for the future. Any new material that comes out like this from a band I like instills some kind of feeling, but I don't think I've ever felt like this (in reference to Blioxi Parish). Simply cannot wait to hear what else is out there in the works.

This is my first post. Recently discovered TGA when Triple J played a live set of theirs that they recorded when they toured Australia and have had them on repeat ever since. I have been trying to figure out the lyrics to BiloxiParish and came across this forum and just wanted to bump the thread with a new youtube clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpWyGhkXLSA
I think the second line of the song as listed in one of the posts here is a bit off, I'm positive it's not 'And if I break the one you rouse, then I know I must be working ' but I cannot work out what it actually is. From the Australian recordings it kind of sounds like 'If I wake up when you rouse...' which makes more sense than 'If I break the one you rouse...'
Anyway just thought I'd throw up the link to this latest clip for you guys to enjoy.

Welcome, AtTheRiversEdge! Thanks for posting the video -if you want to watch the whole Rock Am Ring performance you can chwck it out in the respective thread in the tour-section of this forum.
Concerning the lyrics there are some suggestions earlier in this thread. Seem pretty accurate to me

They made again some changes on Biloxi:
They completely changed the lyrics in the 3rd verse (first time in Berlin)
And they changed the first line of the 2nd verse to I've been down BiloxiParish and that's all the same for me
