(no existing REM thread, apparently)
The new REM album is coming out in March 2011. The 'trailer' has just been released and I like what I hear (also, Patti Smith appears on the album!). Not sure about the dodgy hair styles/facial hair.
Most memorable REM moments: - Walking into HMV in Cambridge and hearing 'Losing My Religion' for the first time (way back when). - Seeing them live in Trafalgar Square in 2001 on South Africa Freedom Day, and then seeing Nelson Mandela on stage (not with them though), all from the front. Man On The Moon, which I'd never liked, was magic that night.

I love REM. I got into them when i was 17 and I read somewhere that Kurt Cobain thought Michael Stipe was the perfect rockstar...I picked up Accelerate which came out around the same time I read the quote. I really advise someone to pick up 'Accelerate' its an amazing record...My favorite album by them is Out of Time.
I am looking forward to the new album. I am a big Pearl Jam fan so I am excited to hear Eddie Vedder in one of these songs. also I saw Patti Smith live for the first time in October and it was downright amazing so I am stoked that she is gonna make an appearance also.
Your missing out if you have not listen to R.E.M

I thought Out of Time was mediocre...does that mean I won't be into the other stuff? Don't get me wrong I loved Losing My Religion but found the rest of the record kind of boring.

You should check out Accelerate...its more guitar driven and has more of a loud rock sound.

So all the early reviews have been positive...looking forward to getting my hands on this...Any album that has Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith and Michael Stipe in it should be pretty amazing.

Graceful indeed.
I've been a fan since about 1989 and REM mean a great deal to me. I saw them live just once (though from the front), at a special South Africa Freedom Day concert in Trafalgar Square in London in 2001, which Mandela was at as well. It was a really special night (as captured for eternity on DVD).

REM had some fantastic songs over a successful career....but I have to say it does seem a good time to end it after some mediocre albums.

I disagree with that. their last two albums were great.

there was some great stuff on there, but they weren't exactly going anywhere new, so perhaps that's why it was best to call it a day, before things got stale

Anybody who's been around as long as they were is guaranteed to have ups and downs. I'm happy to see them go this way, rather than doing the whole walking-dead-but-still-recording thing the Stones have been up to since about 1988.
