But asking for an RT is like saying "Will you look at me?" Then the person looking at you, and then you feeling some kind of false sense of accomplishment/acknowledgement.

isn't asking for an autograph like that? ppl like to the idea of there being a moment that they were thought of by someone they think of all the time but have never met. when you think of it it's an odd situation that we're in, brian has had a big impact in our lives and we think of him quite often but he doesn't know most of us (individually) exist
