That's an awesome find. I loved it when I first heard it in OWL and thought it was just something he was doing. Thanks for the post.

Never noticed this before... homage to Dylan or lazy designer?

Here's what I've got...
"Be sure to hold fast now" - Not sure how "common knowledge" this is, but HOLD FAST is an old sailor's (and modern hipster's) knuckle tattoo meant to stop you falling out the rigging on the old tall ships. Been reading up on old tattoos lately.
"And I ran with dirty angels..." Either a Sham 69 UK punk classic "Angels With Dirty Faces" or more likely, an old gangster movie with the same title.
High Lonesome - Just to clear this one up, "High Lonesome" was an old cowboy movie first, then a bluegrass genre, then a whole mess of country albums and other song references.
"Our father's factories marked our cards, while Eden burned against the stars" - Only worked this one out recently myself, it's from "Changing of the Guards" - "I've moved your mountains and marked your cards, but Eden is burning".
"I left you to find my very own hatful of rain" - Another old movie (thanks Dad), massively depressing 1957 movie about junkies.
"What did you say, oh, the harder they come" - Jimmy Cliff ska song/movie, comes up quite a lot in old clash interviews and other 70's UK punk things. Pretty good movie actually.
"Juliet, she's just smokin' by the window, sayin' "Stone Cold, I believe in you Romeo" - I'm thinking "Romeo & Juliet" by Dire Straits. They're a pretty lame band, but this song still kinda gets to me, and it's sufficiently "New Yorky" to fit the theme of the Gaslight track.

both are in homage to the Blue Note label covers, so not lazy design; in fact, the deluxe cover of Handwritten is the real Blue Note homage

from Rollin' and Tumblin':
"You put flowers down on the cold ground, and cry me a river"
The song 'Cry Me a River' was written by Arthur Hamilton and published in 1953. It was made famous by Julie London in 1955.

I mean…maybe, but cry me a river is also just a super-common phrase in general.

I was listening to Gregory Alan Isakov the other day and his song O' City Lights starts with "Maria's stoned like a porcelain saint sweet morphine sweet morphine" Maybe that inspired Sweet Morphine? I mean, we know Brian is a fan from his instagram.. Anyways I think it definitely has a Gaslight vibe, Maria and all

Did someone get "Not Me Pretty Baby" in Even Cowgirls Get The Blues referencing 'Yer So Bad' by Tom Petty?
It's a play on Petty's original lyric, but I'm almost positive because Brian goes on to say "I still love Tom Petty songs and driving old men crazy."

I was listening to Elvis Costello's "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea" the other day and the guitar riff reminded me a lot of the Queen of Lower Chelsea. Not saying it was an intentional reference by Alex R. but you never know.

The "part of my existence" line in Red Violins is another Great Expectations by Dickens reference. From this amazing passage that Brian clearly loves as he's instagrammed it before and sang segments of it in live in the bridge of Great Expectaions:
"Out of my thoughts! You are part of my existence, part of myself. You have been in every line I have ever read, since I first came here, the rough common boy whose poor heart you wounded even then. You have been in every prospect I have ever seen since - on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea, in the streets. You have been the embodiment of every graceful fancy that my mind has ever become acquainted with. The stones of which the strongest London buildings are made, are not more real, or more impossible to be displaced by your hands, than your presence and influence have been to me, there and everywhere, and will be. Estella, to the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. But, in this separation I associate you only with the good, and I will faithfully hold you to that always, for you must have done me far more good than harm, let me feel now what sharp distress I may. O God bless you, God forgive you!""
(Such a stunning passage that it got me to read the book. I get chills every time I get to "let me feel now what sharp distress I may.")

Trying my best to fulfill Genius with every reference Brian made to other songs: http://genius.com/artists/The-gaslight-anthem
If you want to help, that's much appreciated. That would be one spot where everything is noted once and for good.

It's a pretty common road to take when traveling between NY/NJ and Boston. I used to take it all the time.

Just thought it was funny that Dicken's Great Expectations has 59 chapters...
