| I know we still have another month until the end of the year but thought it would be fun to see what everyones' top 10 songs of this year are. I think for the sake of variety it would be best to put 10 from 10 different artists as I could literally have half of Get Hurt haha!
My top 10 songs of this year (not in any particular order)
01. Have Mercy - The Gaslight Anthem 02. From Gemini To Lynx - Moonlit Sailor 03. Nothing To Lose But Your Head - Augustines 04. Fine By Me - Transit 05. Medicine - The 1975 06. Never Seen Anything 'Quite Like You' - The Script 07. Keep On Wanting - The Fray 08. Listen To The Man - George Ezra 09. Believe In Me - The Pierces 10. Electric Man - Rival Sons

| 1. The war on drugs - Lost in the dream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59mDoc8vZj0
One of those songs for late nights. Whether you're down on your luck or perfectly happy, the song just has the sort of soundscape that makes you slow down and reflect on whatever is going on in your life.
2. Robert Francis - Baby was the devil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uza0I_wpIcw
It's like 80s Springsteen on crack. The saxophone is just so right. Also, Robert Francis is in my opinion one of the most underrated artists of our time. He's written so many exceptional tracks and is definitely worth checking out.
3. Ryan Adams - Feels like fire (No Youtube link yet)
It's extremely simple with very few (if any) surprises, but that's what makes it great. It has just what it needs to have, and has a romantic 80s sensibility to it that really appeals to me.
4. First Aid Kit - Silver living https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNNYtm2XJGc
They probably have the dumbest band name in history, at least it's an exceptionally bad choice in terms of reflecting the lush and powerful sound of the duo, but this song is amazing. Vibrant, epic folk music flirting heavily with old country tunes. It sounds film-like at times.
5. The Hold Steady - Spinners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He6p6IITy7M
I only heard this song a few hours ago but it's got a spot on this list. Just a great rock song.
6. Passenger - Heart's on fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6nE7TZmQ08
I usually don't like Passenger's music because the guy sings like a cartoon mouse, but this song is too good to ignore. Catchy, simple and immediate. Dude should have cut back on the string arrangements, though.
7. Matt Mays - Take it on faith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESRofDkmg0I
You'd think this guy's Californian but he's actually Californian. Straight up, modern heartland rock.
I think that's about what I've got for now.

| In no order, 1.Talladega-Eric Church. A song that takes place at the famous NASCAR speedway, but it is more than fast cars. It is a song about reminiscing your youth. 2.Drunk on a plane- Dirks Gently. Just one of those country songs that makes you laugh.
3. Something in the water- Carie Underwood. Her vocals on this gospel song are amazing. Raise goosebumps and reduced me to tears from the power of the song.
4. Get Hurt Gaslight. Another one of those powerful songs.
5. The Wall- Bruce Springsteen. Probably one of Bruce's best songs in thgr 2000's. Deals with him going to the Vietnam war wall to look for a name- assumed to be the drummer from his first band.
6. Shake it off Taylor swift. Hated it, but it was a huge song this year.
That's all I got so far | |

| 1. Gimme Something Good - Ryan Adams Ryan Adams has had a great year with his self titled album and the 1984 EP, which I almost like better and definitely listen to more, so this song is just kind of representative of that. I was lucky enough to see him in Santa Barbara this Fall and he and his band were pretty damn flawless. He's released a lot of gems this year but "Gimme Something Good" is classic status for me.
2. Get Hurt - The Gaslight Anthem From a sonic standpoint, this might be our favorite band's most impressive song yet. It might not be my go to song from "Get Hurt" (Helter Skeleton, Selected Poems, 1,000 Years have alternated in that spot for a while), but this is probably the strongest song overall, lyrically, melodically, the arrangement, the production. It's gorgeous. And the best part is definitely the "monkey bones" synth noise in the chorus.
3. Red Eyes - The War On Drugs I listened to this album for the first time during an all-nighter of paper writing punctuated by puking and sickness. It was rough. On repeat, it felt like "Lost in the Dream" was carrying me at times. It was like the way people talk about Jesus carrying them - that's what this album did for me that night. And this is the song that filled me with the most joy. I love how much joy is in this album, despite the darkness. I'm sure everyone who loved this album so much this year found themselves in a place where this album was the perfect medicine. God damn is it good.
4. Falling in Love Again - Joyce Manor Joyce Manor put out a purty, very well-written album this year. Sometimes I wish they'd start writing longer songs. This song is on the longer side for them and it's one of my favorites they've ever done. The icy keyboard outro gives me chills, and I love how their songs are starting to become a little more epic and stately. Keep going!
5. Let Her Go - Mac DeMarco This song is so laid back and sweet. It almost reminds me of a jazzy, pre-rock, Cole Porter type of style that I'm starting to appreciate more. And it's got this vintage, tropical vibe that I love. I've only started listening to him recently, but this song has me hooked.
6. Inside Out - Spoon I first heard this song in Wyoming, which is a weird place to be listening to Spoon, especially on this song, which is influenced by Dr. Dre of all people. It's ahead of its time to me, and one of the more experimental songs I've heard from Spoon. Another trippy song makes it on the list!
7. Oaks - The Hold Steady I'm a sucker for Hold Steady ballads as well as their album closers. They always deliver. I thought Teeth Dreams was pretty good, though I haven't returned to it as much as the band's other albums. Out of all the songs, "Oaks" is the one that seems like new ground for the band, with its unique structure, long run time, and surreal nautical lyrics. It's like rock and roll meditation.
8. I'm Not Part of Me - The Cloud Nothings This band has some of the catchiest rock songs of the past couple years. Hooks galore. And it's another first single that also happened to be the best song on its album this year; seems like a trend to me.
9. True Trans Soul Rebel - Against Me! Against Me! has been one very interesting band recently. I'm really happy to see this resurgence of recognition they're getting, and I hope they continue to progress and make many more albums in the future. This is the song that gets me the most pumped out of all the ass kickers that populate their new album. Check out those drums!
10. Would You Fight For My Love? - Jack White Jack White was another great solo artist I got to check out live this year. He didn't play this one, but on my first listen of Lazaretto this is the one that stood out and put a huge grin on my face. While I enjoy the bluegrass influence that appears on most of the album, the sinister, dark vibe on this song is so fun to hear.

| In no order and I cheated.
Home, Like No Place Is There - The Hotelier (literally the entire album, it's just too good) Long Drives - Molly and The Zombies- s/t Factories, Mabu - PUP - s/t Have Mercy - Get Hurt - s/t Argentina (Parts I,II,III) - Tokyo Police Club - Forcefield Do You Think I'm Happy, 17, Blonde Hair - Bobby Barnett - Little Wounds Any "Greg" song on Rented World - The Menzingers Medicine - The 1975
And shout out to We Don't Have Each Other - Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties Wicked acoustic side-project from the lead singer of The Wonder Years. No real stand out tracks in my mind, but a really tight story told through nine songs. Needs to be listened front to back to be appreciated.

| I see some songs that I'm totally going to repeat...it's like all of us on DSS have awesome taste in music or something... In no particular order: All That You Know- John Fullbright. From the "Songs" album, which is brilliant. I could honestly put the entire album on this list because every song is fabulous, but this one just stands out to me. Something about it almost sounds like a church song. Or a Christmas song. And it makes me think of sitting in a dim living room with a glass of red wine and contemplating life. Shake It Off- Taylor Swift. From "1989". I am 100% a Swifty fan, but when this came out I kind of didn't like it. Then one afternoon I ended up having a solo dance party in my living room to this song (I'm pretty sure even the Carleton came out that day), and it ended up one of my favourite songs. Always Be With You- Walking on Cars. Someone recommended this band to me and I fell in love with them. They also have really great music videos (I like videos that have a plot line and theirs are quite theatrical). Then She Threw Me Like a Hand Grenade (demo version)- Matthew Ryan, from the Boxers album. I like it better than the album version to be honest. It's a great song and great album overall. Algiers- The Afghan Whigs, from Do To The Beast. There's something that makes me feel nostalgic about this song. It feels very familiar. Not sure how else to describe it. Dark Places- Gaslight Anthem. This was kind of a toss up, since there are a lot of songs that I would consider putting on this list. The entire Get Hurt album is on my list of best albums for 2014, but I think seeing this live was what really solidified its position here. I remember watching Brian perform this and just being in awe because it sounded so good and made me feel so emotional. True Trans Soul Rebel- Against Me! I think it's just a really defining song for them as a group at this point and it's fantastic. Long Drives- Molly and the Zombies. "Left me for him and then you left him for spite". It's my favourite song of theirs. Stay With Me- Sam Smith, from In The Lonely Hour. Just a brilliant voice and really heartfelt, honest lyrics. Bullet- Ryan Star, from Angels + Animals. I think the first time I really listened to this I was taking a walk on our boardwalk on a really overcast day, no one was really around even though it's normally quite populated. It was the perfect backdrop for this song. Just lonely wandering. Ledges/Dying Now- Noah Gunderson. Actually the entire "Ledges" album as a whole. He's one of my favourite artists and this album is near perfect to me. Oaks- The Hold Steady. It was mentioned above as well, and is one of my favourite songs off of Teeth Dreams too. The previous poster already left a really well written blurb on why it is wonderful so I don't think I need to And yes, I cheated and couldn't stick to 10. Too much pressure. | |

| Also Harbortown- your list is fabulous. That First Aid Kit song is awesome. And I love Matt Mays (he's Canadian but you're right...he could totally fit in as a Californian I think) | |

| My mind is completely blank right now. Maybe I didnt even listen that many records/songs that have come out this year. I guess Ive spent my 2014 listening records that come out in 2013, that I didnt listen then . But heres my top4: 1. Against Me! - True Trans Soul Rebel DeathoftheCool and Smasha13 allready kinda wrote my thought about this song. Great song! What I wanna add is the lyrics are one of the best lyrics from Laura Jane Grace IMO. And those drums. I had heard some live version of this song before with Jay Weinberg and it was okay. But with Atom the song just rises to another level or something. 2. The Gaslight Anthem - Dark Places Just a great TGA song. Kinda dark version of Backseats or something. The lyrics also explains how I feel in my head sometimes, or at least parts of it. 3. Foo Fighters - Something From Nothing Basic FF song, which means a good song. 4. At The Gates - The Night Eternal A band that I use to listen a lot when I was younger and they just played a show in my hometown. Perfect song to end a great show |

Perfect song to end a great show my nigga I wanted to put this song on my list because the outro is so amazing, but the whole song needs to be great for that to happen. Regardless, the outro remains some of the best stuff I've ever heard. So Scandinavian, dark and brooding.

| Wow awesome lists so far I had some bold issues breaking down all this good music into a list of just 10 songs so yeah i kinda cheated a bit and at the end i couldn't beliefe it but gaslight did not make the list for me. Just to many strong rivaly out there. ..in no particular ordner: 1. Nur einmal Rächen - Markus Wiebusch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBaLG5yRIRk An Awesome german musician doing his first solo effort and man did he deliver. There's another song from his album called "Der Tag Wird Kommen" which is a 7 minute anthem against homophobia in the soccer-scene and almost as good as "Nur einmal Rächen". But "NeR" on the other Hand is an anthem for all those bullied nerd kids to live there live better than those by whom they are bullied. So basically this Song sums up my life motto. 2. Shut In - STrand of Oaks Never would i have expected such an electric album by Strand of Oaks but the instrumentation and production is just perfect so i chose this song as an example for the album. Oh and I can deeply relate to the lyrics and the music video is a class of it own: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ypafg_strand-of-oaks-shut-in-official-video_music 3. A Love Song To The City - Kalle Mattson Just a solid Singer/Songwriter-Song about ones Hometown, filled with emotion. And i can't tell why but Kalle's voice has something special to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYRM7-2cVs0 4. Let's call this the "Punk Songs" because otherwise i would not have gotten to 10 Songs Reservoir - PUP What can i say? One of the best straight forward songs of the decade, i don't care that much about the lyrics but the Song itself is a masterpiece! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vm0-VqNcKOU Dirty Cigarettes - Beach Slang Hyped band but lets face the facts: those dudes get some pretty solid punk down the pipe. The lyrics of Dirty Cigarettes haunted me the first time i heard them: Teenage Angst expressed in ia simple and gorgous way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6zfAlzZOxI In Remission - The Menzingers THE Standout Track on Rented World and maybe the Song i came back to most times this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZscWmIizzw 5. Who needs You - The Orwells Well technicly it has been around since 2013 but the rereleased it with their new Album so one can say its a 2014-song straight forward rock'n'roll, melodie, voice, attitude. The song has it all. And who could forget this Letterman performance?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJ9RXe4nn8E 6. Pressure - My Brightest Diamond The way My Brightest Diamond combines clarinet, flute, saxophone, etc with a strong bass-line & percussion part is outstanding. Paired with her voice this song has such a refreshing, modern & new sound to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUenc4m3zQ0 7. Grand Union - Arthur Beatrice The best on this song is the production. The whole album is an eargasm just because of this bold and at the same time so airy and light sound. Its like you get wrapped in by the sound-structure und knocked down by those dark and heavy lyrics. Aaaand the harmonies between the male and female voice make this even better. https://vimeo.com/76309273 8. Above The Clouds of Pompeii - Bear's Den This, too, is not really a 2014-Song but technicly it has been released as a 2014 version of "Pompeii". I liked the older, stripped down version better but the song itself is a masterpiece. Beside this i will always connect it with a girl i was dancing with at a Bears Den concert and might never see again so yeah deep stuff ahhaa hears a nice old live version: https://vimeo.com/73317370 9. Fly Boy Blue/ Lunette - Elbow over 6 minute-long track. Just good. I think i don't have to say more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dELKUivJo4w 10. Angels - Desert Noises Nother 6 minute long track. Desert Noises are one of my discoverys of 2014 and man do they kill it with this song! Folk combined with psychodelic guitar parts, awesome solos and a great bit of feelings. Have a look at ths live video and you'll be hooked! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtDgEoDyi0I ...Beside those Songs a shoutout for all the songs on the new Gaslight Anthem, War on Drugs, Ryan Adams, Augustines, Ben Howard, Future Islands, Lykke Li (especially Sleeping Alone) and I'm Not Part of Me by The Cloud Nothings. | |

| Alphabetical order, I suppose... 1) Augustana - Love In The Air - it kinda sounds like chilled-out Bruce and I don't mind that at all. This was an off album for them but I still dig it, especially the first five songs. 2) Counting Crows - Earthquake Driver - This one's just a ton of fun. One of my favorite bands and the first concert I've ever been to, so they hold a special place in my heart. 3) The Gaslight Anthem - Stay Vicious - I think I'm in the minority on this one, but I love it. I had my doubts after Rollin' and Tumblin' but this completely revived it. I was so taken aback by the low octave in the chorus and I just thought it sounded cool as hell. If the rest of the album was as daring as this I probably would've liked it more. 4) Jeff Linden - Crimson Hearts - He's my brother, but who cares, his whole EP is great. Could've picked anything from it. He's the shit and if you like Gaslighty type stuff with strong vocals and hooks you owe it to yourself to check it out. 5) Magic! - Rude - I love that this was a number one single. I still vividly remember being on vacation in the summer with the windows rolled down and blasting it with not a care in the world. Great times. 6) The Menzingers - In Remission - I don't listen to this album that much but I really like this song. A hell of a lot of power jammed into three and a half minutes. 7) Molly and the Zombies - Long Drives - I remember seeing this at the Pony and telling my brother afterwards that I thought it was one of the best songs Brian's ever written. I still think that. Brilliant song. Noel Gallagher - In The Heat Of The Moment - Noel always delivers. Great track. 9) Ryan Adams - Gimme Something Good - I was unsure at first but this really is a great song and I loved seeing him on this tour. Good stuff. 10) Twin Forks - Can't Be Broken - My favorite band. The bridge is unreal. The last chorus is unreal. They're incredible live. They're some of the best people I've ever met. Can't say enough. I could've picked any number of songs from their album. Just get it. It's that good. | |

| In no particular order:
1. The Gaslight Anthem – Sweet Morphine A lot has been said about Sweet Morphine and I share the love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kCOnZL7ULs 2. FKA twigs – Video Girl Or a bunch of other songs from LP1. In this case I don't really listen to the songs apart from each other, it's just a big bubble from outer space. Also love how she dances! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jhTiLuGezI&pxtry=1 (official video, but the song actually starts around 1:50) 3. The Menzingers – Rodent Favorite song from Rented World and it helped me push my motivation for cleaning the flat and stuff like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Raf3NWSXsk&pxtry=1 4. La Dispute – Woman (In Mirror) Saw them live at a festival and the lines „all the motions of ordinary love“ and „tiny dots on an endless timeline“ really stuck with me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BLiQxT61QQ 5. Molly and the Zombies – Smoke Or Long Drives.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgsc7nRFUOU 6. Die Nerven – Angst Young German punk band, kind of dark and distressed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwtAntTR8q4 7. Childish Gambino – Retro I had a phase where I could not listen to my usual kind of music and only to this guy which was kind of weird. The album from 2013 is actually better but I wanted to include him in my list. He's also an actor (TV show Community) and wrote a 72 pages long screen play for his album. So much to discover there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX5q2_k8NsI&pxtry=1 8. Lana Del Rey – Pretty When You Cry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYZLFtsIwpg 9. The Hotelier – Among The Wildflowers Thanks Yozzy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51h9hFI66Hc 10. Modern Baseball – Your Graduation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbrUzJlTffs&pxtry=1
Didn't make the cut but still cool: Apologies, I Have None – Raging Through the Thick and Heavy Darkness of a Bloodlust, Beyoncé – XO/Drunk in Love, Mighty Oaks – When I Dream I See, Arctic Monkeys – Do I Wanna Know?..
Hm not really happy with the list, seems a bit weak! The greatest discoveries of 2014 weren't released in 2014 I guess.
Last thing: I want you to know that I listen to all the songs you post here and also lots of other recommended stuff on the forum. Discovered great artists this way, thank you all!

| Haven't been on this site in a month or two. Wow. I am such a sucker for lists though. This list is in no particular order.
Taylor Swift - Style Best song off of 1989. Feels like Miami Vice. The production on this entire album is behemoth, but this one stuck the most with me.
The Hotelier - The Scope of All of this Rebuilding You could honestly close your eyes and then pick one of the 8 songs on this album and it would be one to add to your list. I'm glad one person on here agrees that this band is rock solid and amazing. Lyrics and energy that they bring is unparalleled in the emo game. http://thehotelyear.bandcamp.com/track/the-scope-of-all-of-this-rebuilding-2
Beach Slang - Punk or Lust Now is your chance. This band is the new Gaslight Anthem. Get in on the ground level, (well I guess not anymore). They honestly sound like I thought TGA was going to post Sink or Swim. If you are quickly reading over my list, at least check this band out. Also try and see em live, they are great. http://beachslang.bandcamp.com/track/punk-or-lust
Ariana Grande - Problem I love pop music. You know how sometimes you cannot explain something that you love so much other than the fact that it makes you feel good? That is this song to me.
Nothing - Hymn to the Pillory The jam. Yeah sure these guys are mostly jerks, but they sound like My Bloody Valentine, only a little more aggressive. http://wearenothing.bandcamp.com/track/hymn-to-the-pillory
Hard Girls - Sign of the Dune Fun encompassed in a minute and forty three seconds. They did it. One of the AOTY candidates from me as well. http://asianmanrecords.bandcamp.com/track/sign-of-the-dune
You Blew It! - Gray Matter "I wouldn't say you have a way with words, Just a mastery of making sure that they're heard." Damn. That hurt. Song rips musically and those words hurt mentally. http://topshelfrecords.bandcamp.com/track/gray-matter
Radiator Hospital - Cut Your Bangs Rockers rocking. I guess i'm just a sucker for a wonderfully simple pop song. Torch Song isn't as great as Something Wild, but its still an amazing record worth your time. http://radiatorhospital.bandcamp.com/track/cut-your-bangs-2
Modern Baseball - Broken Cash Machine I remember seeing the video of Jake and Bren playing this acoustic and it ruling a lot. Stoked that the studio version also turned out so tight. http://runforcoverrecords.bandcamp.com/track/broken-cash-machine
White Lung - Down it Goes Saw them after being a casual fan. Most energy I've ever seen from a band. Reminds me of Hole but more punk. Sassy, desperate and brash. Check it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-XRjm4gFlI

1. The War On Drugs - Eyes To The Wind
2. Lana Del Rey - Old Money
3. Jamie T - Rabbit Hole
4. Foxygen - How Can You Really
5. Lykke Li - Just Like A Dream
6. Against Me! - Fuckmylife666
7. Ryan Adams - Kim
8. Alice Boman - Over
9. Nicole Sabouné - I Surrender
10. Sun Kil Moon - Carissa

And oh, I love the MATZ EP. Get Hurt is all right, I guess. But I haven't listened to it nearly as much as previous Gaslight records.

| I actually have to add The Last Goodbye by Billy Boyd to my list. Such a beautiful way to close out a great saga. #geek | |
