| i don’t think i’m going out anymore. you better find some other body to comfort. when i was trembling baby, you was a diamond. but you ain’t a diamond no more.
so what you wanna say is my head is a hurricane? well, let me sleep on that, uh huh, alright. you say i’m hopelessly devoted to misery, well, i don’t wanna be so devoted no more. ah, yeah.
and all my friends wanna get into heaven. and all i keep thinking is i wish you were here. i heard that they been calling me the great depression. rolling and tumbling, breaking my own heart again.
shimmy, shimmy shake, baby, right in my bloodstream. i don’t know what it was that got in my room. my ticker tape heart broke and everything shook in here. but i heard it could be worse.
so what you wanna say is my head is a weather vane spinning with the wind chimes. right. maybe i was born on the fourth of july, exploding like a firework. ah, yeah.
and all my friends wanna get into heaven. and all i keep thinking is i wish you were here. i heard that they been calling me the great depression. rolling and tumbling, breaking my own heart again.
so should i take everything? all your temporary medicines? should i take your reds, your blues, and your cocaine? should i take something to try on the weekend? should i take anything? or did you mean everything? and when i hit the wall, wrecked from it all, you’ll put flowers down on the cold ground.
and cry me a river. and assure me i’m crazy. while you question the answers, and you lean on your best friends. until you find better weather. and you take a vacation. i hope you got all my letters. signed the great depression, baby, ...rolling and tumbling.

I tried! I have most of it pretty similar. A couple other things i heard: pretty sure it's "my ticker-tape heart broken, everything shook in here" and near the end it's "until you find other weather" before the vacation line

In a weird way what gets me most excited about the album, beside the song kicking ass, is the cocaine line. Now TO BE CLEAR I'm not saying drugs are in any way good, but that line implies that Brian really isn't holding back or cleaning up his lyrics in ways that he may have in the past.

and near the end it's "until you find other weather" before the vacation line I'm hearing the ticker-tape thing too or some variation on that. But I think it's "My ticker-tape heart broke AND everything shook in here." just because it makes a bit more sense. - eagles1139 wrote:

But let's not assume that necessarily means he got involved with using cocaine based off this. Not saying he didn't either but it's probably best to not make assumptions. Especially since the line only implies someone suggested it, or the narrator of the song considered it as a solution to his problems.

Yeah for sure, I just think he's being brave as a songwriter by putting things like that out there even if it means some listeners will jump to conclusions.

And also, including content like that brings the seriousness of the song to a whole new level, ya know? Whether it's meant to be taken literally or not, it's dark.

| I think this darker writing changes them up completely now. I can't stop listening to this song. The chorus makes me go crazy. | |

| And all of my friends wanna get into heaven, and all I keep thinking is "I wish you were here".
That's just a classic Fallon line right there. With Handwritten I felt some songs forced the whole "crowd will sing this along" element with too many woah-oahs and such, but awesome lines like that are really what makes songs into anthems that will make for a great live experience.

I agree. That was my only real issue with HW is it oversimplified a bit too much. This is seriously the perfect combination of the more detailed lyrics of the earlier records, and the "big-ness" of Handwritten.

Do you want me to transcribe the lyrics? I can actually understand most of them, which is a first for most music I listen to-understanding on the first listen.

| First version of what I hear for the lyrics. (edited to include the lyrics Bradley said-THANKS BTW)
I don't think I'm going out anymore You better find somebody else to come for ends in comfort. When I was trembling, baby, you was a diamond, but you ain't a diamond no more.
So what you wanna say is my head is a hurricane Would you let me sleep at night You say I'm hopelessly devoted to misery I don't wanna be devoted to more
And all my friends are getting to heaven and all I keep thinking is I wish you were here heard they've been calling me the Great Depression Rollin and Tumblin, breaking my heart again
Shimmie Shimmie Shake Right in my bloodstream I don't know what it was that got in my ??? And broken everything ????? It could be worse
So what you wanna say is my head is a weathervane Spinning with the wind child Baby I was born on the fourth of July, burning like a firework
And all my friends are getting to heaven and all I keep thinking is I wish you were here I heard they've been calling me the Great Depression Rollin and Tumblin, breaking my heart again
And all my friends are getting to heaven and all I keep thinking is I wish you were here heard they've been calling me the Great Depression Rollin and Tumblin, breaking my heart again
Should I take everything ?????? Should I take your reds, and you blues, and your Cocaine Should I take something to drive on the weekends
Should I take everything, or should I take anything When I hit the wall,??? it all. And put flowers down on the cold hard ground
And cry me a river Show me I'm crazy Why you question the answers ???? Bestfriends ?????? and youtake a vacation

| References to Dylan : "Hurricane" and Pink Floyd : "Wish you were here"?
Also "Cold cold ground" ?
Reference to "Cocaine" by JJ Cale?

| Lol, all of those are pretty tenuous. The only direct reference I can hear is to the movie Born of the Fourth of July. | |

Wouldn't be surprised if the Dave song influenced Brian. They're obviously good friends and Devour came out probably around the time Brian would have been writing material for Get Hurt.

| Like the lyrics a lot. Did anyone of guys notice Brain seems to continue writing more personal texts while going away from storytelling. Thought that might change after Handwritten got criticized in so many aspects (I think it's a pretty album though).. Anyway, I appreciate that writing style. Just hope it's not a full album of "broken heart relationship" songs. Regarding the lyrics, I absolutely adore these parts...closing up the song so well. ...And I heard that they been callin me "the Great Depression"...in the refrain and then ...I heard (hope?) you got all my letters, I signed "the Great Gepression".. in the end But how dull does Shimmy, shimmy shakesound, even if it's a reference? I hope he sings something different, eventhough chances are bad. | |
