Gaslight style chords

Hey guys,

I wanted to tap the knowledge of a few of you guys.

Basically, I want to look at doing some song writing. I'm not massively experienced in playing, but I'm doing some writing with a friend whose a pretty good player. I figure out some ideas and he elaborates on them.

Anyway, I've got some tunes in my head I want to put out there - in sort of like a Gaslight/Dave Hause/Loved Ones style. I will be using standard tuning.

Can anyone recommend some essential chords both major and minor that can be used. I know people might suggest to listen to the songs, however I do sometimes have a bit of difficulty picking particular ones out - cos I end up getting lost in the song and rocking out!

A whole lot of Gaslight songs are just 4 chords. Generally the I IV V and iv in a given key in different orders (eg. C F G and Am, if your key is C). It's not really anything too complicated. A ridiculous proportion of pop songs only use those chords.
