Was listening to some Tim Barry earlier and wait at Milano came on. The last line of the song is "You goin' west come May Just stay the same, no never change". I know Tim is refering to the month of May and Brian obviously the name Mae but just something to think about there...

The lyrics to that line actually go "Go on west or come to me, just stay the same, whoa no never change". The distinction's pretty clear if you watch any of Tim's live performances of the song on youtube. Tim Barry is big into riding freight trains and "Westbound" is train talk for death. Absolutely amazing and powerful song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6EsmfPs9FU

on a related note, if you have the chance go see Tim Barry live, he's a one of a kind performer

Maybe Mae could be referred to a friend. Just because he says "you can lean into me if you ain't been in love for a while". It's not a cool thing to say to a girl, even if it's a former love. Moreover, he talks to her (?) and says "all my former lover say...", so I think he doesn't consider her as a former lover. Maybe he's talking to a friend, in my opinion.

I agree with the friend possibility, but I'm confused by what you mean by "it's not a cool thing to say to a girl"?

I didn't mean that is not a cool thing, it just sounds like a cold thing to me; it sounds like "I can listen to your love problems, if you want", and I believe it's such a friend thing. I got wrong telling that it's not a cool thing, it's just hard to explain.

Okay I think I see what you're saying. That's interesting. I never thought about it that way. I always took it as sort of like he's saying "You can always lean on me for support when you don't have someone." Wait that sounds bad too, haha. But like, not like he's there if he has to be, more like he's always there and if she needs him, she can count on him. The song sounds to me like it's about a long lasting friendship or the friendship component of a romantic relationship.

Yeah, I think he's showing her his friendship even if they don't love each other anymore. Otherwise that phrase could mean "we can be lover when you don't have anybody else to love" and it's so selfish, ahahah. Very Happy

I bet everyone has had it once, when you haven't listened to a specific TGA song in a while, and you listen it again, and you fall in love with it all over again.

I just had that with Mae. What a brilliant song, really love the ending: It's been so long Mae, so long

Does somebody has an idea what/who Mae is? My guess is a girl but maybe I am missing something Razz

Mae is my 2nd fave of theirs, so I've continued to like it, but after seeing them play it live last week I'm back on a big kick with it...just listening to it over and over. I can't get it out of my head.

The "lean into me" line is the sexiest line Brian's ever written. Along with the whole "deep dark parking lot pressed up against my car..." from Mulholland Drive. Handwritten is a sexy album

How about THC's Crush? "And there was a fire/In your breast and in my brain/Your fingers on my fingertips/Making lines in the windowpane" is quite sexy too, hahahahah

Elsie is the sexiest album Brian has ever released imo... like softcore porn sexy.

If we're talking sexiest Gaslight song, I'm going to go with SeƱor and the Queen.

Keeping on topic though, Mae was the only song I liked off Handwritten for the longest time. And I didn't like it, I LOVE it. I was so disappointed with the album at first, and then *BAM* at the end was this amazing track. Handwritten has grown on me a little (still my least favorite album as a whole) but Mae is definitely one of my favorite Gaslight songs of all time.

True. But it's the "Cause I'd miss your ways" that makes it in my opinion.
