PostSubject: Hi folks   Hi folks Icon_minitimeFri May 25, 2012 11:56 pm

Since I was compelled to make my first post today after lurking on and off for several years, I was asked to "introduce myself" and since I'm trying to avoid my first grad school assignment of the summer semester, this seemed like as good a time as any!

I'm 27 and live in the DC suburbs, and I've been a Gaslight fan since my friend introduced them to me shortly after the '59 Sound came out. I fell in love very quickly. For whatever reason, I haven't found a lot of modern bands that speak to me, and most of my music purchases and interest is either classic rock oriented, or stuff I grew up on in the 1990s. I've really enjoyed watching Gaslight grow as a band in the last 3 and a half years and am very excited for the future. I've been to two full band Gaslight shows and Brian's solo show in 2010, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again this summer.

I don't know that I'll post much, but I appreciate you all welcoming me. I'm always on the look out for new bands and for information on my favorites, so I'm sure I'll have a great time when I do. Who knows, maybe I'll end up making some concert buddies in the DC area through this community.

Cheers,
Josh

Hi Shelby! As I said, I really have a hard time finding new (or even new-ish) bands I like since I just don't have the time that I used to in order to find music, so my musical tastes skew older and varied - I love the Beatles, the Clash, the Stones, Tom Petty, Rancid, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Talking Heads, Prince, Blur, CCR, Nas, a Tribe Called Quest, among many others.

Ahoy hoy, Shannon. Yes, it was you who inspired me to say hello. I couldn't say no to a fellow Virginian (well, I was for 5 years, anyway)!

Sounds like you got good taste! You'll find threads on this site that are about a number of great newer artists worth looking into (ie. lucero, the loved ones/dave hause, the national, etc.)

Also, I'm quickly becoming a fan of The Clash but I only own the London Calling album. Which of their albums would you recommend I listen to next?

What part of Virginia did you live in? I have lived in the Virginia Beach area since '96, but I'm originally from CA.

I'm finding my issue being that artists I grew up liking through the radio or my parents have such extensive back catalogs that I want to spend my money and time diving into them, because I know I'll like them and it will be worth it. That unfortunately takes away time from newer bands, but I'll get there, I promise!

I think that in terms of the "next" actual album, the self-titled debut (UK is awesome, US is different but still has some great songs) is the way to go. I'll readily admit that the first Clash albums that I owned was the "Essential Clash" greatest hits - it contains a ton of their great stuff and gives you a hint as to some of the weirder directions they went on later albums, and provides a gateway to their whole career (I now own LC and the self-titled as well).

I spent five years around Northern Virginia before my job moved to Maryland, and I followed it this spring (I'm a Maryland native). I've spent some time in the Tidewater area for work though.

Nice! thanks. I knew the Uk and American versions were different but it sounds like they were way different. Hmm, which to buy.

Personally I think the US version of The Clash is much better than the UK. They have a few different songs but mostly I find that the songs they took away are good but not nearly as essential as the songs they added to the US version. All are worth hearing though, so I'd say just buy one and then download the different songs from iTunes or something and then you can make playlists of both.

That's funny! For some reason I always find it strange when someone from a different part of the country/world has been here. Tidewater just seems so small to me, even though it's really not. I think Northern VA has a lot more to offer, plus you get more concerts! Razz

the US version takes away some album tracks and adds a lot of really good singles, but I think it takes away a bit of the impact of just a straight up cohesive punk album that the UK debut was. You are correct that the US songs are, by en large, more essential to the band's story and sound.

Where are you from in CA that the Tidewater area seems small? The Tidewater area is a reasonably sized metro area, it's just spread out and has those goshdarn bridge tunnels. Don't know much about its concert scene though. I do remember going to a pretty cool bar in Norfolk and hearing random Gaslight on the sat radio.

DC area gets some good concerts, for sure, I just need people to go with me (my friends are all le suque about music).
