I was watching a documentary on Hair Metal and a dude who used to roadie for Van Halen said that he saw girls do so many morally repulsive things to get to the band that he lost respect for women and couldn't be with one in a mature adult relationship for a long time cus he started looking at girls as pigs. :\ So we can blame bad Moms and floozies I guess. I'll go along with that! Bad moms and floozies ruin it for the rest of us!

Oh my gosh, when I read Oedipus Rex in school I was so grossed out. I already knew the storyline of course, but still. Eewww! No matter how many classes I have taken in psychology or how many books I read, I will never understand the Oedipus Complex. Creepy!
there's also a female version of the complex!! I know. Ugh, I can't even think about that. Like when people say that girls always grow up to marry men who are just like their fathers, I want to scream, "Not always! Not gonna happen!" Super creepy!

| It's not a conscious thing. It's that their Dad relationship is how they form the idea of what love is supposed to feel like, right?
Also I don't mean to be men-bashing. I am positive guys have similar issues with weirdo women too.
Thought of a great quote from Lost In Translation: "The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you."

when I was 14 I developed this huge interest in feminism so I kinda grew up with that I suppose I think kathleen hanna said the things I wanted to hear as a young girl.

Thought of a great quote from Lost In Translation: "The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you." Yes, you're right about it not being a conscious thing. Personally though, I would never marry a man like my dad, so it's a hard concept for me to grasp. My dad isn't a bad person or anything, but we tend to clash and rarely see eye to eye, and I have a hard time getting along with people like him. Haha, I didn't look at it as men-bashing, just venting on the screwed up world we live in and the screwed up residents that inhabit it - male and female. That is a really good quote, and very true IMHO.

| Yeah not every girl/guy tries to marry their parents (Ew? What?) But some of the ones who aren't self-aware try to fill the void their parents created without realizing it I guess. Enter: porn actors & strippers! Going to extremes to get male attention not realizing it's self destructive behavior.
Weird thought, probably related from this past week, can people be heavy drinkers and not ruin lives?

when I was 14 I developed this huge interest in feminism so I kinda grew up with that I suppose I think kathleen hanna said the things I wanted to hear as a young girl. That's very interesting, Lorraine. I have never really thought about it, but when I was little, like elementary school age, I guess my biggest female celebrity role models were Paula Abdul and the girls on Facts of Life. I thought Jo on Facts of Life was super cool and I liked how funny Natalie was. I never liked Blair because she was so shallow. And Paula Abdul was a former Laker Girl for crying out loud! I don't think there were a lot of strong female role models for our generation, those of us who were born and grew up in the 70s and 80s. The male celebrities were way cooler, way stronger, and fit the hero role much better. Ilaria, I started learning more about feminism around age 14 too, and that's when I really got into music by Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, etc. I had always known their songs, but I never took the time to really listen and learn about them as people until that point.

Weird thought, probably related from this past week, can people be heavy drinkers and not ruin lives? Yeah, I think some people can. It just depends on how you handle alcohol and if you have a problem with addiction. I think some people can drink a lot and not have a problem with alcohol, but others would get swallowed up and lose control in the same situation. I'm afraid that I would be the latter, which is one reason why I don't drink very much at all.

| I was just thinking about it cus I have my own experiences with drunks ruining everything but then there are other people I know who just love to get wasted but aren't screwing up relationships or drunk driving, etc. It's just their release and that's it. Otherwise they're productive human beings and good friends.
Moral of the day- not everything's black and white. But sometimes it is.

Moral of the day- not everything's black and white. But sometimes it is. Yep. Sometimes there is a clear right and wrong, a definite yes or no answer. But then there are other times when we have to think in shades of grey. Why must life be so complicated?

| I think I had a bad impression of Riot Grrrrrrrls in the 90's. I was like "I can't relate to throwing tampons out into a crowd so I don't think that scene is for me" and also associated it with Courtney Love who is a f'ing mess. But reading that I get it now. | |

And no matter who comes along in the world of music, there will never again be anyone as uniquely amazing as her. That was an interesting read! "We ARE the revolution!" I love that. Every 13 year old girl should read that and realize what those words can mean for them. Good stuff.

Same here. The extreme tactics turn me off to the whole Riot Grrrrrrrrls concept, but their basic values and causes I totally get.

I absolutely cannot stand courtney love (Although I kinda like some of Hole's work hmmm) but kathleen had this really aggressive attitude (her lyrics just say it all) that I loved! it was like they were trying to catch everyone in the punk scene's attention by being extreme on purpose. Fourteen years old me thought "well, sex pistols did far more disturbing things and they were also crappy musicians but they are remembered as a legit punk band so why is everyone bothered by bikini kill?"

| I have this book that's Lollapalooza Diaries from '95 I think it was. Courtney was really anti-Kathleen but it appears to have had something to do with Courtney's insanity and Kurt jealousy.
Thought of another role model I had- Stephanie in Grease 2 LOL!!! I thought she was cool cus she wasn't a girly-girl. And I also wanted a Cool Rider so I could relate. Cus ya know, 8 year olds should be hanging around with guys who ride motorcycles?
