Ripping iTunes previews

Any supersmart gentleman or ladies know how to rip all the extended itunes previews into mp3 format?

I don't even know why you'd want to.

And why's that?

because Brian's made really clear that this is an album made to be heard in its entirety, not piece by piece.

you can listen to the 90s previews all you want, but you won't get the point of it all. you won't get the feeling the people who've waited till september will get once we've received/bought the album, play it in the middle of the night and listen to those songs for the first time.

that's the way this record was intended to be heard. in Brian's words: "The internet is great for somethings... but it's taking the magic out of music. There's no surprise and no mystery of art when people take it upon themselves to do things."

Well I listened to the samples once but I wouldn't want to rip them and hear them over and over.

well yeah that too. i haven't listened to them, but obviously they're up in itunes and it's not a leak, so if people want to listen to them they're free to do it. but listening to them all the time is a total different thing.

even though i'm sure 99% of the people on this forum who've listened to the itunes previews have already ripped them and have them on their ipods

Well im pretty sure I can listen to any music however I want so yeah

And if he wanted us to listen to them in their full form why release a 1.30 clip before the single?

Well I do agree with you. Nobody can tell you there is a "right" way to listen to music. However I'm just not going to rip the clips for you

Sometimes it's not the artist's choice. Having your music available on Itunes these days is an essential way to get it out there (to people who aren't glued to this forum like myself and many others), so they might have to subject their music to whatever policy Itunes might have.

Man this album needs to leak already. Too much debate on how it should be listened to. I just want to listen. I mean he's got my money 2x over already.

You've made several posts now about how you want this album to leak. I understand you want to hear this record but I think it's kind of a dick move to openly hope for a leak. Leaks seriously hurt independent labels like Side One Dummy that are trying to make an honest living in the era piracy and bullshit output from major labels.

I think it's great that you already bought the record but for every person like you there are hundreds that will illegally download the album without ever paying for it. For the sake of Side One Dummy (and other great independent labels), I truly hope this doesn't leak.

I think a leak will be inevitable but I respect them as people too much not to llisten to a track of it.

I don't agree with your logic here at all. People who are going to steal the album are going to steal the album regardless of whether they steal it before it's released or after it has been released. When it makes it to torrent sites does not matter. If it were to leak, you'd have more people who have already paid for it, downloading it, which would increase the total number of illegal downloads, but the people who were never going to buy it in the first place- that number doesn't change...

It doesn't really hurt S1D that much at all.

I'm really hoping for a leak because I'd love to hear these songs ASAP!

Also, cannot wait for the first show in NYC, I'd love to know the words going into it, rather than just not knowing any of the songs...

In my opinion, listening to the music regardless of how you do is the fundemental thing you do. It doesnt matter how you listen to it, as long as you do listen and you appreciate the brilliance of it. However, i'll still be buying the album pyhsically, cos thats just how i am

If you really think pre-release leaks have no meaningful impact on album sales that's cool but I think most people in the industry (including several people at independent labels I've spoken to) would strongly disagree with you. Anecdotally, I know people who loved the 59 Sound and were planning to pre-order American Slang but opted not to because they got leaked copies.

I also recall that after the American Slang leak, Brian gave an interview in which he explained in detail how the leak hurt Side One Dummy.

the AS leak, having come as early as it did, hurt sales quite badly

that's a good point. a leak before a pre-order would crush a lot of the album's, but a leak after a pre-order... I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make.

Anywho... Counting down the days none the less....

Was there an estimate for how much the AS leak effected saleS?

some people don't pre-order, they just like to buy it off the shelf, and some of those will have exhausted an album and moved on if they've already listened to it for two months by the time it finally hits that shelf

I'm curious who determined sales were hurt quite badly and how they did so. I understand that sales may have been less than the label/band had hoped for based on overall sales of The '59 Sound but that can't be blamed entirely on the leak.

These people are just rationalizing their theft by any means necessary. "I would've bought it if it was out today" is a pretty poor excuse when almost every album leaks at least a week or two early. Given the current nature of the internet, some people are going to download mp3s (for free) regardless. There's just no way to beat that nowadays.

Then maybe bands shouldn't have huge gaps between the finished product and the time it hits stores for people to buy. I know they want to market the record but you can't complain when people are willing to pay for your music but you won't give it to them. Then they download it illegally and don't buy the record when it does come out. It's a shitty situation but that's simply how it works today with the music at our fingertips. You have to pick which way you want to lose.

Guys I'm neither encouraging nor discouraging the downloading of the previews, but a cool way to rip music from sites that stream music (like the amazon previews) on a mac is go to "activity" under window. Then locate the file (ends with .mp3 , amazon previews start with http:///amazonm-117 ) and command-double-click it.
