I was just thinking about what Brian meant by the whole night time music thing. Which got me thinking what you consider to be night time music?

Just listening to Godspeed You Black Emperor for me instantly conjures up night time. Its dark intense brooding music. I used to love walking home at 3 in the morning through empty city streets listening to Dead Flag Blues was so atmospheric and made the whole walk that more epic haha.

there's a playlist in my ipod when I'm not sleepy enough lmao, I'd say: damien rice, sigur rós, the tallest man on earth!
lately I've been listening a lot to frightened rabbit and james blake (he recently did a cover of joni mitchell which is absolutely fantastic) but I managed to fall asleep to social distortion so you'll never know ahahah

I hadn't thought of music falling asleep to counting if so I would count Loveless by My Bloody Valentine particularly songs like to Here Knows When. I never used to be able to sleep without some form of music playing because of mild tinnitus (ringing keeps me awake) so I went through a phase of listening to Loveless every night so blissful to just get lost in. However my Girlfriend has now put stop to this and I no longer need to listen to music to get to sleep.

i guess that's just because of my daily routine that I meant it as "sleep music" (tv shows are kinda my night activity, I need to keep up ahaha) but the artists I mentioned work perfectly either way!

here's the cover I was talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwUkM_QPZy4

I've spent many nights laying in bed with Sigur Ros playing. I can only seem to listen to them when it's late and my head isn't in a good place, but I do love the music.

On the other hand, I have a Gaslight playlist that I call "acoutsic" even though it's not all acoustic. Just acoustic versions and some of Brian's stuff/slower covers. I tend to let that play from my phone until I start to nod off.

On the opposite end, I associate Dragonforce with late nights, using them to stay awake. It works!

I 100% concur with Sigur Ros. I swear they used cured my hangover to in the morning!

On a Sigur Ros side note anyone seen them live both times I have seen them I have had goosebumps from start to finish and some songs where proper lump in the throat moments the only other times a band has affected me in that way live was seeing My Bloody Valentine when they got back together.

Also the Godspeed song I was talking about try and listen to both parts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOYdQOLkqf4 so atmospheric anyone agree with the night-time connotation?

When I think about what "Night Time" music might mean, I would just think of some sort of music containing much more emotion and diversity, and that's just by the title. Things seem to just be more emotional during nighttime than the daytime, and its not really adrenaline driven, but passion-driven.

That's just my take on it, call me crazy. Razz

I'm probably weird. When I hear night time music, I think of driving in a convertible, the roof down, music blaring out of the speakers, and the neon lights bleeding into streaks.

All brilliant interpretations of night time music interesting to see the many different ways people interpret the same theme musically.

Lucero is my night time music. Well atleast some of the older stuff, 1372, regardless of being an overall great album, is too upbeat, I like feeling down sometimes. Or perhaps not down is the right word. Night-time-funny is more correct.

I have been digging a lot of ambient kinda stuff at night. Tim Hecker really loud on a decent set of cans at night in a darkened room puts me into a really strange kinda place in my head kinda hard to explain that one without sounding like a weirdo haha.

When I think of this "night time music" I just think of music that's calmer, slower, and perhaps "creepier." By creepier, I mean darker, moodier stuff, a la Nick Cave (he did mention that The Horrible Crowes were inspired by The Bad Seeds). Which really excites me because Nick Cave is awesome.

Gaslight's music is just so full of energy. I really think this "night time music" is going to tone things down.

The Clash's "Sandinista!" might be the ultimate night album for me.

Very much the same. I actually instantly thought of Tom Waits' Heart of a Saturday Night album. Anything that kind of has those jazzy roots (except not upbeat Jazz Rock like Chicago, it needs to be "grungier" for lack of a better word). Maybe even some piano driven Springsteen like New York City Serenade, Incident on 57th Street or Backstreets.

I love blasting the hell out of Navesink Banks and Red at Night when driving at night. IDK. It just works.

Brad's debut album was always a favourite night album of mine. Shawn Smith's vocals were just sublime.

Any Lucero album is great night time music...Ryan Adam's 'Gold' is quite wonderful also.

Actually Lucero is great to listen to anytime.

Gotta agree with you there. One of my favorites.

Also, Roll Me Away by Bob Seger and Old White Lincoln (by Gaslight) are two of my favorites when driving at night.

Arcade Fire's Neon Bible.

Their other two albums are solid, but Neon Bible completely blows them away, especially for night time music.
