| Not nearly finished yet, but I'll probably forget to post about it otherwise.
Filmed by myself and a dude called Nick, whom at least one of the British members here knows. Two HD camcorders, both full length recordings, footage pretty damn freaking good. Rock-steady, close, etc. I've been to 3 GLA shows in the past few days and the lighting has been pretty sucky at all of them. The cameras agree with my assesment, and they do not like it. The left-angle cam has better low-light performance than the right-angle cam, and even it was struggling. Right-angle is darker than I'd like, but not too bad with a bit of post-processing.
I got an external audio recording too... which is not so good, unfortunately. But perfectly listenable, and it sounds better when watched alongside the video. Vocals are very low in the mix on the tape, but my brain seems to be tricking my ears into believing they're louder than they really are just 'cause I can see them being sung. Hopefully the same will happen to you.
In a burst of enthusiasm I've gotten the first third of the show edited in the past couple of hours, so, a brief sample: EDIT: NEW LINK, YOUTUBE FAILS HARD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsGrNzusKTM Youtube is still processing the video at the moment (2:18am GMT Tuesday morning), shouldn't be long. Pretty representative I think. Some good parts, some not so good parts, some heads visible in the left-angle. That happens a more times than I'd like so I have to cut away more than I'd like. But still, very good overall. Only a quick edit and quick upload so it's a small, low-res web video. Probably not the final cut either - only a first draft run-through and I am really very tired. lol I just realised the right-angle on this song isn't actually as rock-steady as it is for most of the rest of the show. Oh well, no biggie.
Final version will be 2 PAL DVDs and a 8.5GB 720p MKV file. Both uploaded to DIME-A-DOZEN. Possibly some other torrent site too if people want it and don't have a DIME account.
Shouldn't take long to complete so if I don't update this thread in 1.5 to 2 months ish start PMing me and hopefully I'll get e-mails to remind me to come back + update.
Hope someone gets some mileage out of this!

This sounds AWESOME (I don't think I've used the term here before). I am happy to wait for as long as it takes (which shouldn't be too long, should it? ), as this is one show that really needed to be recorded. | |

| Wow, really funny this thread should get updated so recently.
I am literally this very second preparing the 1st Disc for upload to DIME.
Apologies for taking longer than planned. Been busy, ya know.
SteadyNowSteadyNow - sorry man, I didn't mean to ignore your PM, I read it and just completely forgot. I think I'd already written my reply to you in my head, but then I forgot I'd not actually sent it and my brain filed it away under 'completed'. Genuine apologies. I'm also sorry that I didn't notice the shoutout at all. I've listened to the whole thing in the course of editing many times and didn't come across it. Though it is very possible I missed it somewhere. Also possible it is in one of the hard-to-understand sections between songs. Maybe got lost in the muddle of venue acoustics. I dunno. If it is indeed there I'm sure you'll find it when you listen. Sorry!
Oh bloddy hell. DIME is down. Sigh... It's 5:30am. I need to be back to a non-vampire based sleep schedule by the start of school next Tuesday... ah shit I'm going to bed. It could be down for hours, not gonna wait to find out. I will set off the upload as soon as I wake. Probably mid afternoon sometime LOL. | |

--------------------------------
Video recording by NB (Video 2, shot from the right) and Tailschao (Video 1, shot from the left). Audio Recording and DVD production by Tailschao.
Video 1 is a locked down zoom in of Brian at centre stage. Camera was unmonitored. Manual focus, manual exposure (set to max) set in during support acts. Very steady, but with obstructions (I didn't notice as I was not monitoring the footage). Video 2 was monitored & handled, and thus, the camera work is superior. Opposite side of the hall to camera 1, shoots band-members where appropriate, gets out of the way of obstructive heads, etc. Also very steady, from about 3 songs in.
Most of the obstuctions in Camera 1 are located in the middle third of the show. Unfortunately, they also mostly provided by the same guy... who doesn't move. He wanders into frame, then decides to hang out for 45 mins. So for most of the middle part of the show Camera 2 is by far the most active. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just that going multiple songs with just 1 or 2 edits begins to stretch the definition of a 2-camera mix after a while.
The lighting in there was terrible. Seriously. Not the kind of thing I'd have noticed if I was just in the audience like a normal person, but from a video perspective it was just dismal. Camera 1 was manually exposed and Camera 2 auto exposed - but that didn't matter, both cams spent all night wide open. I never saw the exposure on Cam 2 close down once (when viewing the footage during editing, I mean). Not that it should have, wide open was what it needed.
As a result, the technical aspects of the video leave a bit to be desired. I've brightened and denoised, but there's only so much I can do. Final encode is noisier than I would like.
That said, it is still very good. Both angles close and steady. I have a history of being a bit split-screen-happy with my editing. I've kept it to a minimum here.
I'm sure the detectives amongst you will be able to figure out where we shot this from. It's kinda the only place to film from in the Hammersmith Apollo. You might have even seen Camera 2 in action. He fashioned a genuis makeshift tripod on-the-fly. Some serious MacGyver shit.
The Audio is also not brilliant. I taped it from where I was video taping. Not a good audio location. It sounds better than it sounded to my ears on the night. Unfortunately, to my ears on the night, it sounded like a big undercooked chunk of shit in a casserole of shit, so that doesn't mean much. OK I'm exaggerating, but still. Put it this way - it's better if you know the lyrics already. Seeing the video helps too - eyes trick the brain into thinking the vocals are clearer than they really are simply because you can see Brian singing them.
I was hoping another audio tape would surface. Unfortunately... not the case.
So here we are.
Overall, a DVD that is annoying because it could so easily have been better. But still a very good one.
I don't think I'm going to be uploading a HD version after all - the with the visual quality from the lighting and processing and brightening and denoising etc, there would not be much point. I also have a feeling I set Camera 1 slightly out of focus. So yeah. SD DVD is all you're gonna be getting.
There's one sample here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsGrNzusKTM I will probably upload a couple more soon. But it's 5:30am and my sleep schedule is already fucked up enough. I'm going to bed.
I Hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and may 2011 be filled with much joy and music and taping galore.
DVD 2 follows when DVD 1 finished.
FLAC Audio by itself will follow after that.
I'm tired so if I've forgotten anything I will add to comments. But I think everything important is covered.
DVD 1 Tracklist: Intro High Lonesome Stay Lucky Bring It On The Diamond Church Street Choir Old White Lincoln Even Cowgirls Get the Blues Old Haunts Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis? Casanova, Baby! | I can put it on The Traders Den afterwards if enough people want me to.
Traders Den is still a torrent site and you'll still have to register, but DIME registrations are closed so you can't get it from there if you don't already have an account.
FWIW, I'd very much rather nobody re-encode it to a lower resolution/lower bitrate XviD avi file and re-upload somewhere else. I'm not gonna get all whiny if you do, but I humbly request that you please don't. It's already blocky enough. If you want the DVD, please please make the effort to either sign up to The Traders Den and download the full total 8GB or pester some kind soul to download, burn and mail you a copy. | |

| Well they open periodically when they delete old inactive accounts. But, ostensibly, they are closed to any additional members beyond their current numbers.
I think you were just lucky to have gotten in straight away. It took me nearly a month of trying before I got in lol. Unless they've gotten much more open recently, which is possible I suppose.
Trying to get into DIME would probably be the first port of call for anyone who wants it, yeah. | |
