If the album that they maybe are doing is anything like this then I think it goes down in history with Let It Be and Tim easily...

Nice - i'd heard that they'd been recording..... I was at their last show in 1991 but it rained during NRBQ (who opened along with Material Issue....) so we said "Eh we'll catch them next time!" Right. Stupid us. I had to listen to them breaking up on the radio on the car ride home with my parents...

(...listen to that bootleg if you haven't already...it's a trip...)

I've heard two versions of that show - one with and one without the wxrt DJs calling out what was happening (when they handed off their instruments)…sound is incredible as boots go, but of course, the show was a mess. The archive Sami posted should have that one. If not - Slicing Up Eyeballs has it. There was a FB archive project going at one point too, that may have stuff.

I was at Riot Fest too - I hadn't seen Paul since the first solo tour (which was was strange, if I remember…was at Metro...). The irony that it rained the day of their RF set was not lost on me. Wink I blew off the Pixies to stake a spot up front and the rain stopped during their set, then resumed for the trek home/elsewhere after…it was great (that one's booted, too, though the quality is average….lot of drunk dudes happily singing along…)

I don't know if anyone caught Brian say on 19th Crossroads show that he had been listening to Dizzy Up the Girl earlier that day (probably the Goo Goo Dolls last good record, really…their earlier stuff is great, though…and they used to be a helluva live band...) but you may or may not know that Paul worked on Superstar Carwash and co-wrote "…Normal." That's not the interesting part. The interesting part to me was an interviewer once asked Paul about it and he mocked Johnny R for sending him a guitar as a thank you. He supposedly gave the thing away. hahaha…aaaah, Paul…. Wink. Cracks me up…

Edited to ask this Q: Was there ever any discussion on here about the MATZ acronym and 'Mats? Purpose or a happy accident…? Always thought that was funny…Wink

Yeah it rained almost the whole day. Friday and Saturday it was sunny, but on Sunday mothernature didnt like us Mats fans. Kinda fitting actually. I was soaking wet and got a little sick the next day. But didnt care at all. The time of the actual gig it didnt rain if I remember correctly, but soon as the gig ended it started rain a little bit which seemed magical or something. Day after the gig me and my friend continued to Minneapolis and checked many Mats places and stuff.

EDIT: I got to learn to read, because you just mentioned the rain thing. Well nevermind...

I've wondered the same thing about MATZ! Probably an accident, but definitely a great one. Dizzy Up the Girl is one of my all time favorite albums, made my day to know that Brian was listening to it.

That's really interesting.... I actually think there's a TON of overlap with GGD and TGA with lyrical themes and also vocal stylings... Early GGD isn't too disimilar from TGA, though a bit more poppy.... The guitar in Dark Places sounds nearly identical to Stay With You from GGD.

I think TGA could use some of the sounds from DUTG to aid their sound as well...

Saw Westerberg live years ago in San Francisco, he's a helluva front man.... Smashed his guitar, it broke and cut his head, blood dripping everywhere.. The show went on....

Great night! Love the 'Mats, love the Dolls, love TGA...

Anyone else hear how all three are in the same family?

Uh, hang on, Dizzy Up the Girl is NOT the last good GGDs album. Say what you will about Let Love In onward, but Gutterflower is a awesome. (Personally I love all of them but I know the more recent stuff isn't everyone's bag).

I can't say I've ever heard much GGD influence in TGA, but the Goos, Gaslight, and the mats are 3 of my top 4 bands so that must say something.

Also, kind of unrelated, but I love how people on the Goo Goo Dolls forum love to say how Brian Fallon is a prick. Yeah, well just because you're a fat, miserable housewife doesn't mean everyone else has to be. (Sorry, I have a laundry list of gripes with the Goo fandom.)

Agreed, Gutterflower ROCKS!! I don't think GGD has influenced TGA just that I can hear why I like both bands in things they both do similarly regarding lyrical themes and some vocal strengths.

Could not agree more about the vibe from GGD fans (you're on absolutegoo eh?), GGD concerts suck because the fans suck, everyone's complaning about something, nobdoy dances, some people sing... but heaven forbid you bump into someone moving to the music...

so lame...

Mats and TGA > GGD at this point, but I'd take GGD from 93-2002 over Mats and TGA

I hate the people on Absolute Goo... it's gotten so bad that the guy who owns the site (AG...don't know his real identity) singled me out and bullied me over the PM system, and when I told him that what he was doing didn't make any logical sense, he told me I had two strikes and if I said something out of line again, he'd delete my account. It's kind of a long story what happened, but I didn't do anything wrong. Absolute Goo vs Dimestore Saints reminds me of the competing views of John Locke vs Thomas Hobbes, in that John Locke (DS) believed that people could govern themselves with little supervision, and Thomas Hobbes (AG) believed that without an oppressive, overbearing government, people would just turn into a bunch of lawless savages. It's like... we're fucking adults on a message board. We don't need 1,001 conduct rules, especially when said rules are unwritten and randomly enforced.

And you're right, the fans suck too... the women are snobs and the men are assholes, and it just seems like everybody's competing with each other, but what are we competing for? Johnny doesn't wanna fuck any of us! I just go to the shows to enjoy myself and I forget everybody else. They don't want to talk to me and I've stopped trying to talk to them. Oooh, you've been to thirty shows in the past year. Wowee, I've been to 6 and don't care. I'm definitely not saying every GGDs fan is awful, but the general vibe they put out as a group is one of exclusivity and unfriendliness.

But anyway... yes, I agree that vocally Brian and Johnny are quite similar in some respects. I think they're also similar in that their songs are never repetitive, which is one of the biggest draws to both of them for me. They never repeat their verse, they always tweak up the chorus a little, and very few of their songs sound the same. They write songs that are well-rounded and well-crafted on all fronts, and it's an admirable trait in both of them. They don't take half-baked ideas into the studio and try to knit a song out of them.

Tom-ayto tom-ahto….but I do think that Gutterflower is when they started to have incomplete records. Johnny was very clear (especially when discussing 'Name' after it exploded) that there was "no going back" after that. Launchpad moment. While I don't think they sold out out by any means, and I sure as hell don't damn a band for getting out the clubs into an arena (why would you NOT want your song played on the radio??) I just didn't find what they were doing interesting. I liked parts of albums and not full albums. I think there are maybe 3 songs off Gutter that moved me when it came out...

When I bought Hold Me Up when it came out (what was that? Like 1990??) I actually had to special order it. They came a long way, baby. Good for 'em. But I heard a recent song and now they Kanye'd his voice….do you know the one I am talking about? I just kind of shook my head. I couldn't believe it was them. They're better than that. Whatever….

I actually never ever compared those two (Johnny and Brian). Never. That's interesting.

As far as forums go, I've never gone on Absolute Goo. I didn't know it existed (though I never looked for it…I've not seen them live since the late 90s…I don't listen to them much anymore...). And now I don't plan to bother based on that description…That's unfortunate you had a shitty experience. Those folks sound peachy.

(But isn't it amazing how different people will be when you run into them face to face at a show? They can't hide behind a computer. It's like they forgot their balls in the jar that their mothers keep them in. Wink ).

Yep, Hold Me Up was 1990. I think the "Kanye'd" song you're referring to is Caught in the Storm, since they remixed it for airplay but the airplay went absolutely nowhere other than maybe a few satellite radio stations. It's a great song though; the remixing is just uncalled for and laughable. Johnny also did a number with the group Cash Cash, but he didn't write that one; just did the vocals.

I'd recommend starting with Superstar Car Wash! 1993, a nice mix of their older and current sound.

Hold Me Up 1990 is a little closer to 'Mats sound, but I dont think as good of a record overall.

Funny story about the show... GGD actually opened for the 'Mats last tour when they broke up, of course 'Mats are back now but kinda crazy....

^^^ YEs. I agree. Start with Carwash. I have a soft spot for that one, though.... I'm 1,000 years old and that came out when I was in still in HS. Reminds me of my HS boyfriend and his adorable, floppy Evan Dando hair....Wink. I still throw "Fallin' Down" and "Girl right next to me" on the iPhone occasionally...

Happy happy, joy joy. Smile

http://pitchfork.com/news/58403-the-replacements-announce-us-tour/

So what I'd been told (prob like most of you) was that the whole reason Duff was filling in for Tommy in GnR for a few dates was a) dat der reunion, b) recording a new record. Regarding "b)"....Yes I may be starting a blasphemous rumour. Or just perpetuating one, given I have not read this whole thread....but...whatever. Keepin' hope alive. Nothin' wrong with that...right?

Im going to see them again in Amsterdam. So exited! Kinda weird that they got Paul to do these tour, because he hates touring and havent done one in like 10 years. Couple interviews about them and their future:
