I'm sure there's a Beatles hater out there somewhere, but it's likely he/she is a very lonely and crazy person. Heck, even Charles Manson liked them!

Anyhow, The Beatles are great, timeless, influential and so forth. But I wonder if the memory of them is already fading out in this generation. Personally, I'm a Beatles fan still. Abbey Road was one of the first vinyls I bought and I love listening to any of their albums; anytime & anywhere.
In my guitar ensemble class, though, I came to realize there are a lot of people that know next to nothing about them or their music. One of my friends there is well into the indie music scene and is a good guitarist, but draws a blank when I mention pretty much anything Beatles-related. I don't think it's an age thing either, because he's only two years younger than me.
So how about you? Are you fan and listen to their music? Or they sort of filed under the dusty reference material section in your mental audio library?

i'm not a huge fan but i haven't heard a heap of their stuff, i mean i listened to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but it didn't really do much for me.

before i check myself into a mental institution which album should i check out?

I don't really have high hopes because that was number 1 on the 500 greatest albums of all time in rolling stone.

I'm not saying rolling stone is god but number 1, out of 500, of all time, should count for something.

I like them...own several compilations but no actual albums. I'll wait for the remasters for that.

Abbey Road has a pretty broad appeal and I think it's a good gateway album. Here Comes The Sun is one of my favorites songs off of there. Also, The Beatles 1 is a great compilation (all their #1 hits)... too, there's a great Cirque du Solei remixing of some of their songs, called Love. Great, great album.

Sgt. Pepper isn't for everyone, I suppose, but it's impossible to overstate how important that album it is. Changed everything, it really did. Star Wars:Sci-fi::Sgt Pepper's:Music. Maybe give it another listen?

Anyhow, I guess my favorite songs are...
Blackbird (fun song to play on guitar!)
Here Comes The Sun
Let it Be
Yesterday
While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Maybe YouTube those that you haven't heard. See what you think!

i don't consider myself to be lonely or crazy, but i don't like the Beatles much at all. they were either way too poppy early in their career or too trippy and psychadelic late in their career. there is some middle ground that i think is okay, like the song Let It Be. but still, i don't have a single Beatles song on my ipod

My friend lent me Sgt. Peppers and Revolver, must be about this time last year. While I can acknowledge (maybe) the fact that people point to the Beatles as key to the development of the music we know today, I've never been into them, and to be honest, I don't understand the fuss surrounding them; even if they were good in their time, and still maintain lots of fans now. The friend who lent me the albums and I debate who has had more influence of actual 'rock' (although a huge term nowadays) music- he champions the Beatles, myself Bruce Springsteen. The debate is ongoing, and neither of us are willing to budge.

While I am a huge Springsteen fan, I think his influence on rock as such is not very significant, although Nebraska had considerable influence on many song writers.

As for the Beatles, while I like them enough to have the red and blue double albums, I consider The Who to have had much more impact on rock, incl. heavy metal and punk, than either the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.

I've got The Who's greatest hits on vinyl... GLORIOUS!!
Still, I'm more a Beatles person. The Who was more straight up rock and the road that went on. The Beatles were more than just rock, they changed music across the board. For example, we've already talked about Sgt. Pepper's as an album, but you also gotta realize it was the first concept album.

The reason I like The Beatles is that their songs still resonate. The melodies are unforgettable and the combined talent of the 4 of them made an unmatched catalog of music. Listen to Here Comes the Sun, and tell me that doesn't make you feel cheery! Spin Hey Jude, and feel all your worries go away in a sweeping anthem. Or listen to Yesterday and get weak as all your life's heartbreaks come flooding back into your chest.

Them vs Bruce Springsteen... I'm with Steady Now Steady Now. He's got good stuff, but he never made nearly the impact that the Beatles made in music as a whole. As for listening regularly, I find The Beatles vocals a lot easier to swallow than Bruce's!

i kinda grew up on the beatles...my mom used to play them a lot, their early, poppier stuff, and the later stuff, too. one of my favorite songs was "eleanor rigby." i dont listen to them all the time, but i still like the music.
i would be surprised if their influence and their music were fading that quickly. someone that doesnt recognize the Beatles' songs, i can only imagine doesnt know much about music, or pay attention to it? not saying you have to enjoy it, but how can you be ignorant of their music?

I'm not a huge fan but I respect the hell out of what they've done and accomplished. I'll give 'em a listen every one and a while but they're by no means a band that I listen to full albums. Their contributions to much are unmeasurable, their inspiration, incredible does that mean we should all love them? Not necessarily. They've never been my sound but I admire them and thank them for what they've given to all of us.

The Beatles are really great to chill to...I have no problems with "poppy" music as long as it's good and The Beatles definitely are. That said, I can't get into their very early stuff, but I really like the songs I've heard from Revolver onward.

Octopus' Garden is one of my favs.

Nah, can't afford it. New Cowboys Stadium + former Beatle + outrageous parking = too expensive! Would've been fun to go to, but the best seat I could get would leave me just watching the jumbotron :\

I DL'd some of the albums from the new mono remastered box set.... Amazing!!
I think this segment of an IGN review puts it well:

Quote :
A lot of younger music fans have a hard time grasping why The
Beatles are such a big deal. Maybe listening to this magnificent
reproduction of their work will turn on a light. The Beatles were
pioneers. No one had thought to create a concept album like Peppers
where each member took on the role of a fictional musician. But what is
most stunning is that following the critical and commercial success of Sgt. Peppers, The Beatles were able to move on. They never made another album like Sgt. Peppers. Instead, they made masterworks with The White Album and Abbey Road. And all of this – from Please Please Me
on through to their final rooftop performance atop Apple Corps – lasted
less than a decade. It's one thing to create one timeless album in a
career, but to create so many over such a short span of time is a feat
likely never to be approached by another band.

It's really true. I encourage everyone to listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, I think you'll be impressed if you've never heard it. On my listen through tonight, I never really thought if this way, but you can draw a pretty clear line from the title track of that album and The Clash's sound.

I'm not really sure what you mean by the Clash comparison...I don't hear it at all. Obviously they were heavily influenced by The Beatles but I don't hear anything in that particular song.

Strummer's first band, The 101ers, would cover the Beatles from time to time.

I've been listening to a fair amount of Beatles earlier stuff lately and it's getting me interested in Motown.

^I've never gotten real deep into Motown, but I really would like to. I love everything I've heard by Marvin Gaye, especially What's Goin On (friend of mine has it on vinyl, trying to convince him to sell). Jimmy Ruffin and Ben E. King are some other favs, and The Temptations were one of the groups I grew up on. Dangit, look what you've done! Now I'm gonna have to go out and grab some Motown records!

OK, I'm not gonna lie I'm now a huge Beatles fan but I've only really been listening to the earlier albums ie With The Beatles, Please Please Me & A Hard Day's Night.

Once I've exhausted them, I'll turn to albums like The White Album, Revolver etc.

YES! Glad they've grown on you. The range of their body of work is pretty amazing really. You compare their first and last albums, and it's a world apart in terms of musical style. The early stuff is pretty bubble-gummy (yet great), the later stuff is all about pushing the creative envelope. They did amazing stuff in such a short time.

Have you gotten to watch the movie A Hard Day's Night yet? It's really good as a movie (and of course, the music is ace).
