I know this isn't really "Song Meaning"-related, but I didn't know where else to put it..

You guys know how this is written about Brian's friend dying, however he did? Well, about 4 months ago, on March 14, my friend Alec killed himself. He was 15 or 16.. And like, I didn't know how to react (and still don't, really) and on this other forum I frequent (Talkbass) I posted a thread about getting over it. And someone suggested writing a song, and I replied something along the lines of "The '59 sound sums up how I feel."

Has Gaslight helped anyone get over things like this?

If you guys care, his obituary, along with the guestbook, is here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dailylocal/obituary.aspx?n=alec-j-metzger&pid=156515890

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. That's so awful.

I had a similar response to The '59 Sound when a guy from my senor class (acquaintances not close friends) died in a car crash and I heard this song for the first time about 10 months later. Especially because he died on a saturday "ain't supposed to die on a saturday night" and the way everyone honored him after his death was by playing "One Love" because it was his favorite song. "did you hear your favorite song one last time?".

Obviously not as hard to get past as when it's your close friend but still it helped.

And there's definitely several other examples I just can't think of them at the moment.

Yeah. And at the Revival Tour, which I watched online.. when they play The '59 Sound, Dave or Chuck or whoever was singing backup sung "Ain't supposed to die on a Thursday night". He died on a Wednesday, but I found out on Thursday night as if that was when he did it. They played "Wake Me Up When September Ends" at Alec's funeral, because he was a huge Green Day fan and that was one of his favorites, so I guess you could say he heard his favorite song one last time.

I'm actually thinking that was the Dublin gig? I was there.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I don't think it's for any other reason outside of the 'here and now' moment, if that makes sense?

Not quite the same, but I totally get that (even though I've never had a girlfriend) haha

Kinda irrelevant.

But OP, sorry for your loss. The song gave me the goosebumps for the longest time. It's helped me to cling to these kind of things, they help you get by.

The 59 Sound has gotten me through a tough time last fall my Uncle was diagnosed with stage 4 Kidney cancer in October 2013, and then he passed away early November 2013 it happened all in 5 weeks. About 2 months earlier I had made my uncle a cd mix of music that I liked Celtic Punk, Alternative, and Punk, The 59 Sound was one of the songs I put on the cd for him. He had a chance to listen to the cds before he was diagnosed I asked him what he thought of Gaslight and the song The 59 Sound he liked it a lot, so every time I listen to the song I think of him.
