| In "Miles Davis and the Cool" it goes:
"Like Miles Davis, I've been swayed by the cool. There's just something about the summertime. There's just something about the moon. So I'll lay a kiss on a stone, toss it upside your window, by the roof. Before you change your mind, Miles, bring in the cool."
I take from that it's the music he's playing for the girl, who he's trying to get the attention of.
But, i mean, anyone can take it differently.

| He also mentions it on American Slang. - Quote :
- The cool is dead, baby
Go on and sleep Rest your weary head and love a better me And in the morning We'll start over again - Quote :
- So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise And tell me about the cool He sings to you in those songs If it's better than my love Then bring it on

- Why "Jackson!" to punctuate the "So why don't you sing to me on this long drive home" stanza?
Jackson was the name of the kid in the studio who was cleaning while we were recording. I put his name in there because I thought he was the coolest kid—very humble, great guy. We spoke about his grandmother and church. Nobody seemed to pay him any mind, so I gave him a shout-out. It also just sounds cool. http://www.indyweek.com/indyweek/the-gaslight-anthems-miles-davis-and-the-cool/Content?oid=1215309

| I always imagined the 'cool' in GA songs to be a generic jock/casanova/good looking/charmer/perfect etc sorta person. The sort of bloke who the girls always prefer over him. | |

| Yeah, there used to be all kinds of jazz, and swing stuff. The cool truly is dead, because it just isn't what it used to be. It's all in reference to Miles Davis, the birth of the cool, and King Of Cool. And I sometimes hate those lyric pages. They're rarely accurate.
It's just one of many things that influenced Brian. Just like Joe Strummer, The Boss, Bob Dylan, Old Movies, like Casablanca, and On The Waterfront. He's just a very nostalgic songwriter, and I think that's why this is the greatest band on the planet.

| I feel like the Cool could be the past, and how it's romanticized by the characters in the '59 Sound and American Slang. But I think by Spirit of Jazz they get throw it away. I'm not sure. | |

I think the way Brain uses the Cool it represents some sort of nostalgic romanticism. In a 'it was way better back in the days' kind of way. Throwing rocks against the window of your first love instead of poking her on Facebook for example.
